Uno Pizza Prices

Top Restaurant Prices is not associated with Uno Pizza

Ah, pizza! We have so many choices in pizzas and pizzerias in the United States that it has become a culinary culture on its own with everybody having strong opinions about them. We have heated debates about which pizzas are the most delicious and which pizzerias from New York to Chicago are the best – and these debates will likely go on for as long as pizza is served in homes, restaurants and fast-food joints.

Uno Pizzeria & Grill, the franchised pizzeria chain owned and managed by Uno Restaurant Holdings, is among the top pizza chains in the United States for a good reason. Known previously as Pizzeria Uno and Uno Chicago Grill, the chain specializes in a Chicago specialty – deep-crusted pizza. The Uno Pizza prices are also part of the attraction since these are affordable enough for the average Americans – or to say it in another way, the pizza may be deep-crusted but the pockets don’t have to be deep to enjoy it.

In 1943, Ike Sewell and Ric Ricardo opened the first Pizzeria Uno in Chicago, Illinois particularly in the River North neighborhood of the Windy City. Ike Sewell, a former football star of the University of Texas, wanted to open a Mexican restaurant but opted for a pizzeria instead and, in the process, also created the deep-dish pizza.  (There are claims, however, made in the Chicago Daily News that the original deep-dish pizza recipe was created by Rudy Malnati, Sr., a chef.)

When Pizzeria Uno became popular, Sewell opened another pizzeria that he called Pizzeria Due located one block north of his first pizzeria. By the way, uno and due means one and two in the Italian language.

Today, the chain has more than 200 locations in the United States including in California, Massachusetts and Illinois as well as abroad, such as in Saudi Arabia. The corporate headquarters are in Boston, Massachusetts.

What They’re Famous For

Uno Pizzeria and Grill’s most famous – and bestselling item, for that matter – product is the thick-crusted, Chicago-style pizza. Keep in mind that the Chicago-style pizza and the New York-style pizza may share most of its ingredients for the crust and toppings but these are different in many ways, too.  The Chicago-style pizzas also come in three different varieties, stuffed, deep-dish, and bar pizza (i.e., a thinner crust pizza).

What are the differences between the typical pizzas of the Windy City and the Big Apple? First, the Chicago-style pizza has a thicker crust than the New York-style pizza, even when the former is in its thin version (i.e., bar pizza). Second, the former has more sauce, more toppings and more cheese than the latter so it has a richer and fuller taste to it. Third, the former is typically sold as an entire pie, oftentimes enough to feed two persons even for an individual serving, so it’s a more group-oriented pie than its New York counterpart, which can be sold in slices and smaller sizes.

Why Eat Here

Wherever you find yourself in a city with a Uno Pizza restaurant, you should head on to it for a single reason – deep-dish pizza! The Uno Pizza deep- dish pizza is considered as among the best in the country, if not the best by its loyal fans. The pizza provides an explosion of delicious tastes and textures in the mouth from the thick crust to the tasty toppings with each bite.

If you have yet to eat a deep-dish pizza and you have only eaten thin crust pizza, you may find it an odd dish. For starters, the crust has a subtle corn flavor coupled with the noticeable flavors of garlic and butter so it’s already filled with flavor on its own. You will be unable to fold it, unlike in a New York-style pizza, because of its thickness while its texture is similar to a somewhat heavy piece of toast.

Then there’s the next layer of cheese – plenty of cheese that adds another thick layer, usually 3/8 to 1/2-inch thick – to the already thick crust. This is another difference with the New York-style pizza, which has the sauce on top of the crust with the cheese and toppings on top of it. The generous cheese layer means that the deep-dish pizza has a cheesier, gooier texture as well.

On top of the cheese is the toppings, which are as plentiful as the cheese. In fact, there are more toppings in terms of number and amount on a Chicago-style pizza than in its New York counterpart that you can say goodbye to your calorie counting.  The toppings can include sausage, pepperoni, broccoli, and spinach, to name a few, as well as several types of cheese including feta, Romano cheese, and cheddar mixed with mozzarella.

The sauce tops it all off. In a Chicago-style pizza, the sauce is chunkier especially for Uno’s deep-dish pizza so be prepared for more texture.

Be sure to order your deep-dish pizza in advance since it can take 45 minutes to cook. You can head on to the bar while waiting or wander around the city for a while before coming back for it.
