About Uno Pizza

Uno Pizzeria & Grill, the franchised pizzeria chain owned and managed by Uno Restaurant Holdings, is among the top pizza chains in the United States for a good reason. Known previously as Pizzeria Uno and Uno Chicago Grill, the chain specializes in a Chicago specialty – deep-crusted pizza. The Uno Pizza prices are also part of the attraction since these are affordable enough for the average Americans – or to say it in another way, the pizza may be deep-crusted but the pockets don’t have to be deep to enjoy it.

History

In 1943, Ike Sewell and Ric Ricardo opened the first Pizzeria Uno in Chicago, Illinois particularly in the River North neighborhood of the Windy City. Ike Sewell, a former football star of the University of Texas, wanted to open a Mexican restaurant but opted for a pizzeria instead and, in the process, also created the deep-dish pizza.  (There are claims, however, made in the Chicago Daily News that the original deep-dish pizza recipe was created by Rudy Malnati, Sr., a chef.)

When Pizzeria Uno became popular, Sewell opened another pizzeria that he called Pizzeria Due located one block north of his first pizzeria. By the way, uno and due means one and two in the Italian language.

Today, the chain has more than 200 locations in the United States including in California, Massachusetts and Illinois as well as abroad, such as in Saudi Arabia. The corporate headquarters are in Boston, Massachusetts.

What They’re Famous For

Uno Pizzeria and Grill’s most famous – and bestselling item, for that matter – product is the thick-crusted, Chicago-style pizza. Keep in mind that the Chicago-style pizza and the New York-style pizza may share most of its ingredients for the crust and toppings but these are different in many ways, too.  The Chicago-style pizzas also come in three different varieties, stuffed, deep-dish, and bar pizza (i.e., a thinner crust pizza).

What are the differences between the typical pizzas of the Windy City and the Big Apple? First, the Chicago-style pizza has a thicker crust than the New York-style pizza, even when the former is in its thin version (i.e., bar pizza). Second, the former has more sauce, more toppings and more cheese than the latter so it has a richer and fuller taste to it. Third, the former is typically sold as an entire pie, oftentimes enough to feed two persons even for an individual serving, so it’s a more group-oriented pie than its New York counterpart, which can be sold in slices and smaller sizes.
