About Subway

Submarine sandwiches, or simply subs, are the first choice for hungry people who want on-the-go filling and flavorful meals in a single package. These sandwiches are, after all, larger than the typical sandwiches made with sliced bread. The larger size isn’t just because of the baguette-like bread used as a base but also because of the larger quantities of meats, vegetables and cheeses that can be piled on top. Subway prices are about average when you compare them to rest of the sub sandwich fast food market.

And when it comes to the best subs in the country, even in the entire world, only one name stands out: Subway! Indeed, the chain of sub and sandwich shops is widely credited with the resurgence of popularity for these American staples in the mainstream market. Walk into any Subway shop and you will see a diverse mix of customers, if you proof of its high acceptance rate among consumers.

History

Subway started as Pete’s Super Submarines, a sandwich shop opened by Fred DeLuca in Bridgeport, Connecticut in 1965. He borrowed his $1,000 capital from Peter Buck, his friend, with whom he eventually established Doctor’s Associates, Inc. in 1966. But it was only 20 years after the first shop was opened – in 1986, in particular – that the current name for the chain was adopted.

Currently, the chain is still owned and operated by Doctor’s Associates, Inc. with headquarters in Milford, Connecticut. Subway is among the world’s largest single-brand restaurant operator with more than 44,900 locations in more than 110 countries and territories. Doctor’s Associates, Inc. remains as a privately-held company that owns and operates among the world’s fastest-growing franchise operations.

Just how successful is Subway? For comparison purposes, Subway has more shops in the United States than McDonald’s and that’s enough evidence.

What They’re Famous For

Of course, Subway is famous for its extensive lineup of submarine sandwiches! Customers can choose from the set menu or customize their own subs – and there are about two million combinations possible from the available ingredients, too. The breads, meats and vegetables, cheeses and spices can be mixed and matched to your heart’s content, and the assemblers will not even raise an eyebrow at weird combos.

Why Eat Here

Food isn’t just about its tastes and textures – it’s also about its aroma and appearance. At Subway, the first thing that will likely greet you as soon as you open its door is the appetizing smell of caramelized sugar being made. But it isn’t actually caramelized sugar – it’s more like the combination of the breads being toasted, the meats and veggies being prepared, and the English muffins, cookies and flatbreads being baked. Think of it as an enjoyable cacophony of smells that immediately stirs your appetite for more.

The subs are obviously the core products at Subway and these are among the best in the world. Such is the huge popularity of the subs that the chain serves 5,300 or more of them every minute!

Do you trust the palate of the chefs behind Subway? If you do, then you will find the pre-set Subway subs as flavorful, perhaps with a gourmet quality to them. The choices are aplenty, too – BMT with pepperoni, salami and ham fillings; mango Chicken Tikka; Tuna & Cheese; Cheese & Onion; Nacho Chicken Salsa; Chipotle Chicken; Chicken Teriyaki; Chicken Pizziola; and Subway Melt, to name a few. There are also several types of breakfast subs like Sausage, All Day Mega Melt, and Bacon.

Of course, you can have customized subs, too, if the pre-set subs don’t meet your present cravings. With dozens upon dozens of choices in processed meats, cooked meats, raw and cooked vegetables, herbs and spices, and condiments, you can be as traditional or as non-traditional as you want in your combinations. You can also stick to an all-meat sub or an all-vegetable sub, if you’re feeling more health-conscious.

What about the quality of the subs? We have to say that these are as delicious as they look and as others say they are! Your choice in breads and toppings will obviously affect your customized sub’s overall flavor profile but since it’s your palate, you have the right to it.

Did you know that you can ask for your bread to be cut a certain way? There are two basic cuts that most customers choose from – first, the old cut and the wing effect. In either case, your sub will taste the way that you likely imagined it to be since the cut of the bread won’t affect the quality of the ingredients – it’s more about the appearance of the sub and the ingredients that you can get with each bite.

Aside from the subs, the menu also includes muffins, cookies, and doughnuts, as well as wraps, paninis, and salads. The breakfast sandwiches, pizzas and flatbreads are also noteworthy, as is the coffee and other drinks.

Subway adopts the New York style in food preparation. Diners select the bread and toppings for their subs, pay for their orders, and wait for the assemblers to assemble their orders.  Customers, however, cannot see the entire assembly process since the subs are prepared inside a closed kitchen.
