Some like their food to be picture-perfect for the ‘gram while others couldn’t care less about the presentation as long as they’re good. If you belong in the latter group, then there’s a very good chance that you’ve already heard about the smashed burger.

This particular type of burger is popular in the Great Lakes region. What sets them apart is their patties that are cooked in a way that involves pressing down on the patty while it cooks on a flattop grill. It’s characterized by a squished appearance and seared areas. It’s said to be tastier as the cooking method releases the meat’s juices, giving you a different kind of a “better burger”.

Smashburger is one of the best-known purveyors of the said dish, as its name would suggest. They put the said type of burger under the spotlight and spread the knowledge about its existence through the chain’s expansion.

Combining Smashburger prices with its relatively unique concept, high-quality food, and the founders’ expertise, the chain became one of the fastest-growing businesses in the industry. Today, it continues to expand all over the world, providing better burgers to a wider audience.

History

Smashburger was established in 2007 by restaurant industry veterans Tom Ryan and Rich Schaden. Ryan helped formulate Pizza Hut’s stuffed-crust pizzas and also worked for McDonald’s as a chief concept officer. Schaden, on the other hand, was a former CEO of Quiznos. They wanted to build their own “better burger” chain and decided to use the smashed burger technique known in the region.

They went with the name ‘Smashburger’ because it describes their concept succinctly and it has a solid handmade connotation. They believed that it has a certain appeal to their target market and they were not wrong.

An interesting thing about Smashburger’s establishment is the commitment Schaden and Ryan had in its development. They used their capital for some research. They ventured into learning how to effectively cook and manage high-end restaurants and develop a “fast kitchen engine” to make their operations more efficient. They soon developed a kitchen design that cuts down the cooking time of the burger cook by eliminating their need to walk to the freezer to get a new batch of patties.

They also extensively tested their ingredients, going as far as sampling up to 300 kinds of beef. In the end, they decided to go with chopped Angus.

With experts at its helm, it’s not surprising that Smashburger grew aggressively in a short span of time. Aside from their menu, the founders also worked on making the business model scalable. Soon enough, they started to expand and open stores in other states where the founders are familiar with the local real estate markets.

In terms of marketing, Smashburger highlighted the quality of its food and local flavor. They went as far as offering exclusive menu items in every city, making them very unique and distinguishable.

They also targeted customers based on available data. They were able to group their patrons into 14 archetypes and appealed to them using the information that is available. This has led the brand to open most of their stores near or inside university and college campuses.

After hitting some tough times, Smashburger got its revival after changing ownerships just recently. The new owners, the Philippines-based Jollibee Food Corporation, are also relatively new players in the international scene so it’s quite impressive that they have revamped the brand and are making a profit.

Today, Smashburger’s more than 370 locations continue to offer better burgers at friendly prices.

What They’re Famous For

With a name that came from the very technique used to make their specialty, there’s no guesswork involved in learning that Smashburger’s top-sellers are their smashed burgers. As mentioned above, these dishes are quite unique for the upscale burger movement as it’s not as elegantly made as its competitors.

Again, as mentioned above, smashed burgers require smashing a patty during the cooking process to get the flavor out. The meat gets cooked in the very juice it releases, adding more flavor to the mix. The searing done to the surfaces of the patties also give it a nice charred taste, adding more dimension to its taste.

To complete the burgers, the chain offers a selection of toppings that you can mix and match according to your preferences. They offer a wide selection of fresh ingredients to choose from, guaranteeing that you have enough choices to complete your meal nicely.

Why Eat Here

Why should you eat at Smashburger? The answer is simple: they offer a different kind of “better burger” that you might not have sampled before. Most of their sides are also equally fancy, so a visit to one of this chain’s stores can certainly give you an all-new dining experience.
