In 1935, Curtis and Prestley Blake opened their first Friendly shop, a small ice cream store selling affordable double-dip cones, in Springfield, Massachusetts. In 1940, the brothers opened a second larger shop with an expanded menu. Both shops, however, were closed during World War II and opened after it ended. By 1951, the chain consisted of 10 shops in Connecticut and Massachusetts, a result of aggressive expansion plans that resulted in 500 locations in the Midwest, Northeast, and Mid-Atlantic regions. In 1979, the brothers sold the company to Hershey Foods Corporation that, in turn, sold the chain to Tennessee Foods in 1988. After several corporate changes including filing for bankruptcy and closures of shops, Friendly’s is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sun Capital Partners, a private investment firm.

What They’re Famous For

Friendly’s shops are well-known for their large selection of ice cream flavors and ice cream-base desserts, such as root beer floats, frappes, double-thick milkshakes, ice cream sodas, sundaes, Friend-Z, and Fribble shakes as well as the popular cone head, an ice cream treat with Reese’s Pieces.

Why Eat Here

Aside from the budget-friendly Friendly’s prices, you can become a regular patron of the ice cream chain for several reasons including:

  • Delicious ice cream in as many as 22 flavors from the classic to the quirky. Your cravings for the cold, sweet and creamy treat will be satisfied here. You can also enjoy the Fribble, a thick shake made with soft serve ice cream, and the Friend-Z, a soft serve ice cream with several toppings.  You may even enjoy ice cream-based treats at home, such as sundaes-to-go, ice cream pizzas, ice cream cakes, and ice cream rolls, as well as cartons of ice cream.
  • Delectable non-ice cream food items for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Your choices include burgers, wraps, sandwiches, and fries. You don’t want to make ice cream as your primary food for the entire day especially as it is packed with sugar.
  • Fast service from the wait staff, even when you are taking longer than necessary to make your choice from the large ice cream dessert selection.
  • Clean amenities suitable for kids and adults alike.
