About Portillo’s

And among the most popular chain of restaurants born and raised, so to speak, in the Windy City is Portillo’s. The chain specializes in Chicago-style foods including hot dogs, which are at the core of the menu, as well as Italian beef and Maxwell Street Polish. Most of its restaurants are located in the Chicago metropolitan area while many more as in Illinois, Arizona, and Florida, among other states.

History

Dick Portillo founded the company in 1963 with the first location initially known as “The Dog House”, which was just a 12-foot trailer without running water and restrooms located on North Avenue in Villa Park. He wasn’t enjoying as much success as he wanted to because of the stiff competition so he performed market research, which essentially consisted of him observing his competitors’ operations as a customer.

By 1967, his business was making money, as well as relocated to a larger trailer and renamed eponymously – Portillo’s. More locations followed so much so that he enjoyed the success he wanted.

In 2014, however, Dick Portillo sold the chain to Berkshire Partners.

What They’re Famous For

Portillo’s prides itself on being the home to the best Chicago-style hot dogs, burgers, and Italian beef. Even its chocolate cake is a bestseller because of its truly scrumptious quality. The food and drinks are also served in generous portions in the tradition of American fast-food.

Why Eat Here

Every Portillo’s restaurant undoubtedly offers the best Chicago-style dogs, Italian beef sandwiches, and Maxwell Street Polish sandwiches! Even its competitors – and there are many from Illinois to Florida – cannot equal the savory quality of its meats complemented by the deliciousness of the vegetables and breads. While the chain doesn’t claim to be the inventors of these dishes, it has become the go-to place for people who have a craving for the quintessential Chicago food.

Let’s take a closer look at these three bestselling items. The Chicago-style hotdogs consists of Italian beef, which can be dipped in gravy, dry, or extra, and peppers that can be hot and/or sweet depending on your preference. To say that it’s the juiciest hotdog you have tasted in your life may well be an understatement.

The Maxwell Street Polish is considered as a classic Chicago food and, in fact, it’s synonymous with the Windy City when you think about the must-have food while you’re here for business or for pleasure. This was originally created in the Maxwell Street market thus its name while its ingredients are mostly sourced from local food growers.

The ingredients include either a fried or grilled Polish sausage with a topping of yellow mustard and grilled onions, as well as the option to added pickled green sport peppers (i.e., served whole). These are then served on a bun and voila! You may have a mess on your plate but it’s worth it with every heavenly bite.

The Italian beef was also created in Chicago dating back to the 1930s. As a sandwich, its fillings consist of thin slices of seasoned roast beef with a gravy-style topping known as au jus, which are served on a long Italian-style roll. You can choose whether the roll can be dipped or not into the au jus where the meat was cooked in depending on your need for layers of flavor. Your sandwich will also likely have a topping of either sautéed green Italian sweet peppers (sweet) or Chicago-style giardiniera peppers (hot).

Whenever you’re in Chicago, you should visit a Portillo’s restaurant and order one or all of these classic Chicago foods. You will find that these may be on the fattening side but every calorie is worth the delicious flavors, delightful mouth-feel, and satisfying filling in the stomach.

The customer service is satisfactory even when there are plenty of people in the restaurant. The crew members are usually friendly toward the diners, as well as relatively attentive to their dining needs – at least, as attentive as can be considering the fast casual ambiance.  The noise level can range from the average to the loud depending on the time of day with the lunch hours being the busiest and, thus, the loudest.

We always suggest Portillo’s for groups because many of the food and drinks labeled as single serving are generous enough to be shared among two persons.  The prices are affordable, too, so dining out doesn’t have to drain the pockets.
