Surprisingly, Panera Bread Company is owned by a foreign company, JAB Holding Company, a private firm owned by Germans, the Reimann family. But this only goes to show that when it comes to delicious food, there’s no distinction between nationalities!

History

In 1987, the husband-and-wife team of Ken and Linda Rosenthal established The St. Louis Bread Company with the company’s first bakery located in Kirkwood, Missouri. By 1993, Au Bon Pain Co. acquired The St. Louis Bread Company for $23 million and in 1997, its name was changed to Panera Bread Company. Panera means granary or bread basket in the Spanish language.

Panera Bread is known for its wide variety of baked goods and pastries including bagels, croissants, scones, cookies, brownies, and muffins as well as its signature artisan breads. These products are always baked fresh daily in the bakeries by the on-staff bakeries; to prepare for the breakfast rush, the baked goods are baked before dawn.

What’s there not to love at every Panera Bread? As soon as you enter its restaurant, you will be welcomed warmly by the staff and the vibe itself has a yuppie feel to it, especially since the customers are mostly young people. You will also find families and couples, as well as college students and teenagers, in the crowd, an interesting mix that makes for great people-watching, if you’re into it.

Unlike your usual fast casual restaurants, Panera Bread restaurants have comfortable couches in the dining area. Think of it as a hangout for cool people who like to hang out with their family and friends with the delicious baked goods within reach and around a crackling fire in the hearth.

But it isn’t an old-fashioned hangout either. Customers have access to its free Wi-Fi although the number of minutes that each customer can use it may be limited to between 30 and 60 minutes. Still, it’s sufficient time to take photos of yourselves and your food, post these photos to your social media accounts, and surf the Internet.  Afterwards, you can focus on your savory sandwiches and sweet desserts, just as you should while in a Panera Bread restaurant.

The menu features several types of paninis and sandwiches, pastas, soups and salads, flatbreads, and sides, as well as as kids’ menu. The drinks include fruit smoothies, iced drinks, frozen drinks, coffee and tea drinks, espresso drinks, lemonade, hot chocolate, and lattes.

And speaking of the food, we suggest trying every one of the sandwiches so that you can decide which ones you like the best. But if you’re not the adventurous type, food-wise, you may want to try these items on the menu.

The Black Bean Soup is arguably the healthiest soup on the menu. With black beans, celery, onions, potato flour, and tomato paste, it has a rich, creamy flavor but it’s low in fat. Keep in mind that it uses corn oil, not olive oil.

The Strawberry Poppyseed Salad with Chicken is so colorful on the plate that you can’t resist but dig into it immediately. The base consists of greens while the toppings are a savory mix of organic chicken, fresh fruits like blueberries, strawberries, mandarin oranges, and pineapple, with a sprinkling of toasted pecan pieces for texture. We love the fat-free poppyseed dressing, too, especially with avocado slices mixed in.

The Peach & Blueberry Smoothie with Almond Milk is such a creamy concoction that we’re tempted to drink it every day! The combination of peach and mango purees with the juices from passion fruit and white grape adds complexity to its overall flavor – it doesn’t taste so sweet. The unsweetened almond milk adds creaminess without the excess fat, and it’s a good post-workout drink, too.

The Steel Cut Oatmeal with Almonds, Quinoa and Honey is a nutritious breakfast meal. If you’re on the way to a workout, you should pick it up from your local Panera Bread and eat it along the way.

Panera Bread also has indulgent comfort food that may be high in fat but loaded with plenty of memories. The Mac and Cheese has its shell pasta drenched in rich cheddar cheese sauce. The Steak and White Cheddar Panini, a hoagie roll, is comfort food in itself with its combo of beef sirloin tip, horseradish sauce, and white cheddar cheese.

For dessert, go for the Kitchen Sink Cookie (salty dough baked with semi-sweet and milk chocolate, pretzel pieces, and caramel), Chocolate Chipper Cookie, and Coconut Macaroon.
