History

Gary and Colleen Worthington started baking artisan hearth breads after mastering the European techniques, developing their own unique flour blend, and testing countless recipe in the 1990s. Soon enough, they realized that their signature breads were perfect for sandwiches and soups – and thus was born Kneaders Bakery & Café in Orem, Utah in 1997.

In the next two decades, the chain added more food and drinks to its menu, from sandwiches, soups and salads to handcrafted pastries. There are currently 60 retail stores in eight states, most of which are in the State of Utah. Then and now, the chain’s mission has remained – to offer quality freshly-baked breads and baked goods more accessible to its customers.

What They’re Known For

The Kneaders Bakery chain is perhaps best known for its Chunky Cinnamon French Toast, a recipe developed by the founders’ son. This is a rich breakfast item that appeals to the taste buds of kids and adults alike.

Of course, the bakery’s baked goods are the main attractions; according to management, these comprise about 20 percent of sales in the stores. The artisanal hearth breads, handcrafted pastries, and indulgent pies, among other sweet treats, are the chain’s staples as well as the foundation upon which its reputation continues to be built on.

The excellent quality of the baked goods is due in part to the bakers’ and pastry chefs’ intense training in the art and science of baking. Most, if not all, of them have undergone formal training in prestigious culinary schools and in-store training. The extensive menu is a sweet tooth’s dream, so to speak. The sheer number of sweet breads, pies, cookies, brownies, fruit tarts, and cookies available can be overwhelming, especially for a newbie to Kneaders Bakery, but satisfying to a frequent patron.  There’s two or more sweet treats that will satisfy your own cravings, no matter what these may be.

Just how many food items are in the menu? As of last count, there are more than 12 varieties of the artisanal hearth breads and 42 types of pastries! Just scanning the menu and shelves will make you feel like you’re in Willie Wonka’s factory or a kid in a candy store.

But sweets aren’t the only things that Kneaders Bakery is good at either. The savory flavors of its hearty soups, delicious sandwiches, and healthy gourmet salads can’t be missed!

These food items are the perfect complement to the sweetness of the breads, pastries and cookies, as well as become your staples for breakfast, brunch and lunch.  The chain also offers seasonal dishes so there’s always a variety of food available.

Don’t worry too much about the calories because the Kneaders Bakery chain uses wholesome ingredients in its artisanal hearth breads. Just flour, water and salt are used, a fact that contributes to the pureness of these breads.

The menu also features several vegetarian-suitable breads, salads and sandwiches. Be sure to ask the crew members about the appropriate choices; the chain, however, doesn’t allow for customization of most of its food and drinks.
