History

In 1940, brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald opened a barbecue restaurant in San Bernardino, California. But by 1948, they decided that hamburgers were more profitable than barbecue and, thus, converted their restaurant into a hamburger stand. They also adopted a production line approach to hamburger preparation, an idea apparently inspired by the automobile assembly process.

By 1953, the first McDonald’s franchise was sold. In 1955, Ray Kroc became a franchise agent for McDonald’s and then purchased the McDonald’s brand and chain from the original owners. Known as The Founder, Kroc is credited as being the founder of the modern-day McDonald’s as we know it today.

Under his tutelage, the McDonald’s brand and chain also became the leader in the fast-food industry, both in the United States and abroad. His aggressive expansion strategy resulted in the chain’s enduring popularity in more than 120 countries worldwide and with more than 36,900 locations – and growing – today.

Even during peak hours, the lines at the counter move at a fast rate, thanks to the staff members’ quick thinking and quick-on-their-feet movements.  Waiting in line shouldn’t last for more than five minutes apparently and it’s something that customers appreciate.
