History 

Scott Redler, a restaurateur, along with his two brothers, Bill and Randy Simon, founded Freddy’s in Wichita, Kansas in 2002. Freddy Simon, their father, was the namesake and inspiration behind the restaurant. The company’s first franchised location was opened in Hutchinson, Kansas on December 2004.  

As of March 2018, the Freddy’s chain has 300 locations in Kansas, Kentucky and Indiana, among other states. In the same year, the company has also entered into an agreement with the Tastebuds Group to bring the Freddy’s concept to the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, and Qatar, among other countries in the Middle East.  

What They’re Famous For 

Freddy’s, or Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers, specializes in frozen custard, specialty sundaes, and blended sundaes known as concretes in a wide range of flavors as well as in steakburgers, chicken sandwiches, and Vienna Beef hot dogs.  

Why Eat Here  

Freddy’s may not look like the type of restaurant that offers the best burgers in the fast-food industry but it does! The 2-ounce lean beef patties may be ultra-thin but these are so flavorful that you won’t need a thick patty anyway. These are grill-smashed, which results in a larger crust surface, as well as cooked with a house-made seasoning made of salt with onion, garlic, paprika, and onions.  

The patties are then grilled to perfection, just the right amount grilled to get the Maillard reaction and nearly burning. These are crispy on the surface and juicy, succulent and tender on the inside. Talk about enjoying ultra-thin patties where other fast-food joints emphasize thicker patties!  

Some people may think that the patties are on the dry side but these aren’t for most people, thanks to the melted cheese slices and the butter.  The toppings of raw white onion, yellow mustard, and sliced pickles create a few more layers of flavor in each bite.  

The signature steakburger is one that Freddy’s takes pride in. You can order it as a single, double or triple patty wonder; each steakburger is topped with a slice of melted American cheese so a single order has a single slice while a double order has two slices, and so on. 

There are also two versions of the steakburger and both are delicious – we know because we tried both of them. The original steakburger has steakburger patties and cheese as well as pickles, onion, and mustard served on a butter toasted bun. The California-style steakburger has steakburger patties and cheese with Freddy’s sauce, onions, lettuce and tomato.  

Tip: Ask for added pickles because these are exceptional for a fast-food.  

What about the frozen custard that Freddy’s is famous for? The smallest serving comes in a generous portion and it’s smooth, creamy and rich, just as you would expect from its presentation. The frozen custard is so addictive that you will be forgiven for enjoying the largest possible bowl you can eat!  

You can choose from either a vanilla or a chocolate custard that can then be eaten as is – the vanilla is fantastic – or mixed with as many toppings as you would like. You can also order it as a sundae or as a concrete, an extremely thick shake that doesn’t lend itself well to straw.  You should have these treats because, let’s face it, life is too short to be worrying about calories. 

As for the customer service, the staff members are typically efficient, helpful and courteous even when people seem to be on edge from being hungry. Come to think of it, being surrounded by sweet treats like Freddy’s frozen custard encourages positivity in a world filled with negativity – or it may be just because the relaxed, family-friendly vibe puts people at ease as soon as they enter the doors.  

Yes, Freddy’s is a fast-food chain – there’s no going around it – but it offers a significantly better dining experience than many of the more well-known fast-food chains like Burger King or McDonald’s. The ingredients are obviously of higher quality and the food tastes better on all levels.  

The prices may be more expenses but the better dining experience makes it worth your while. You may even bring your family and friends as many times as possible so that they, too, can enjoy the Freddy’s experience.
