Reservations at Alinea are tricky to get, and you have to pay upfront. However, if you want to secure a table, it is worth joining the wait-list.
Alinea’s gallery and salons offer two different dining experiences. The gallery ranges from $405 to $465 per person, while the salons are $295 to $365 per person.
Upon arrival, you will notice the high level of service Michelin-star restaurants offer. The staff ensures that your table never gets dirty, and if you leave the table, they fold your napkin and place it on the back of your chair for when you return.
Here is my personal experience dining at Alinea:
The first course was a unique and outstanding dish. One member of our party had a seafood allergy, and the restaurant accommodated him by substituting seafood with shaved carrot, sweet potato, radish, and tofu.
The second course is equally unique, featuring a charred piece of arctic char that has been marinated in bourbon maple syrup for two days and glazed with maple syrup, creating a delicate candy-like snap.
The third course has many layers, with a small dish wrapped in parchment paper that reveals a scallop cooked “en papillote.” The other dish in this course had a thin film covering the top of the bowl, with a warm egg yolk dropped on top to reveal a fish stew.
For the next course, you are invited into the Alinea kitchen, known for its unparalleled precision, mutual respect of calling everyone “chef,” and absolute silence. You are served an amazing cocktail in the middle of the kitchen, followed by a creamy and finely chopped shrimp cocktail.
One of the most unique experiences at Alinea is the fun food “jokes” and puns encountered throughout the meal. The dishes are served with a surprise, such as flipping over the dish to find smoked arctic char roe sealed in a smoke-flavored gelatinous bourbon barrel tea.
While the dining experience at Alinea is wonderfully fancy and fun, it does come with a higher price tag. However, the level of service and innovative use of molecular gastronomy make it a unique and unforgettable experience that you are unlikely to find anywhere else.
