Submarine sandwiches, also known as subs, are popular in the United States because of their all-in-one quality. Every sub already has three of the macronutrients in it – carbohydrates from the bread, proteins from the meat, and fat from the dressing – as well as the vitamins and minerals from the vegetables and herbs. Add the spices and it’s a light meal or a heavy snack in itself, aside from the fact that it’s an excellent on-the-go food.

DiBellas Old Fashioned Submarines, known simply as DiBellas, is among the foremost sub-centric fast-food chains in the United States.  The chain maintains several locations in New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Indiana, and Connecticut while its corporate headquarters are in Rochester, New York.

History

Founded in 1918, the chain of DiBellas restaurants started as a family-owned delicatessen in Rochester, New York. But the deli’s prepared foods soon became more popular than its grocery items so its management decided to focus more on the former.  Today, the still family-owned and –operated chain consists of nearly 50 stores and specializes in awesome subs.

What It’s Famous For

DiBellas’ star attraction is its classic American subs with contemporary tastes. According to its management, these subs are at the core of who they are and what they do – truly, an American success story based on a classic fare served with classic American substance.  The chain also prides itself on its loyal following wherever its restaurants are located, thanks to the exceptional quality of its subs.

In fact, its Rochester location continues to earn raves from its customers as the “Best Sub in Rochester” based on polls done by local newspapers.  We can confidently say that such excellence also extends to its other locations!

Every sub has a bread as its base and the DiBellas bread is definitely among the best in the industry.  The bread is always freshly-baked on site so that customers are assured of the freshest hot-off-the-oven bread. The fillings for the bread consist of premium meats, cheeses and vegetables as well as condiments, herbs and spices.

Why Eat Here

The submarines are the best reason to become a regular customer at your nearest DiBellas restaurant! We have even heard of many people actually searching online for the nearest DiBellas wherever they find themselves in the abovementioned states. The subs are filling and satisfying so no wonder it has a cult following in its own right!

The breads come in several versions, namely, plain, sesame, and multigrain as well as the everything-in-it type. These are also available in small, medium and large with many people saying that the larger version is sufficient for two people. The Godfather is the most popular because of its delicious combo of Genoa salami, spicy ham, and capicola while the Italian Assorted skips on the spicy ham.

The Dagwood is a meat lover’s delight with its generous servings of corned beef, ham and turkey. This can also be said for the Genoa salami, turkey and ham of the Old Fashioned as well as the turkey, ham, and roast beef of the Uncle Louie.  DiBellas is a meat lover’s paradise where subs are concerned.

But vegetarians may also build their own subs with the assorted vegetables available. For people who have specific tastes, the DiBellas restaurants also offer build-your-own-sub service. You can choose from up to three meats in your sub, such as corned beef, Genoa salami, and turkey, combined with your choice in vegetables and cheese.

The freebies for the subs include mayonnaise, mustard (i.e., plain, honey, and spicy), horseradish and ranch. The sauce selection includes blue cheese, BBQ, and steak while the vegetables are lettuce, tomato, onion, sweet peppers, hot peppers, and banana peppers, among others.  You will not run out of choices in your personalized subs because the restaurants also offer new ones on a seasonal basis, aside from the year-round selections of meats, vegetables, sauces, and cheese.

We love the specialty subs, too, which may be pricier than the regular subs but are worth every extra dollar.  These subs also come in small, medium and large sizes. The choices include DiBella’s Cheesesteak (grilled steak and melted cheese with an option to add grilled onions and peppers), Italian Meatball (beef and pork with mozzarella cheese and marinara sauce), and Chicken Philly (grilled chicken and melted cheese with grilled onions and peppers).  There’s even a sub fit for red-blooded cowboys – The Cowboy with thick-cut bacon, all-white meat, barbecue sauce, and cheddar cheese topping.

The sides like macaroni salad, potato salad, and pasta salad as well as the cookies (e.g., chocolate chip with walnuts) are to die-for, too.  Let’s just say that every item on the menu is an American classic so every visit at a DiBellas restaurant feels like coming home.

Every DiBellas restaurant has a retro theme, particularly harking back to the 1930s and 1940s. The chain also caters for small and large events, both in the restaurants and in homes, offices, and schools, among other venues.  While there’s a 10 to 20-minute wait depending on the hours – the lunch hours can be hectic – the wait staff members are usually friendly so it doesn’t seem to take too long.
