Build-it-yourself pizzas aren’t a novel concept in the ultra-competitive pizza industry of the United States. Indeed, it’s a dime a dozen concept with old and new pizzerias offering their own versions. The trick then for the successful pizzerias is to distinguish themselves from the competition and build a loyal following of their own.
Has the Your Pie chain succeeded? Yes, it seems so judging by the increase in its number of locations and by the accolades it has received. But you have to judge the quality of its build-it-yourself pizzas by partaking of them yourself.

In 2008, Drew French launched Your Pie in Athens, Georgia. But his idea for the fast casual pizza restaurant was born in May 2006 during his honeymoon with his wife to Ischia, an Italian island off the Naples coast. He observed that brick oven-baked pizzas were virtually everywhere and he realized that build-it-yourself, quick-serve artisan pizzas are possible.
The chain has nearly 60 locations in the United States. Since its launch, it has garnered numerous awards including being ranked #66 of the Entrepreneur Magazine 2013 Top New Franchises and one of 1851 Magazine’s 2013 64 Restaurants To Watch.
What They’re Famous For
Every Your Pie restaurant offers its customers personalized 10-inch pizzas, which are then baked in traditional brick ovens at high temperatures for a few minutes. The menu also includes bread bowl salads and build-your-own Panini sandwiches, as well as craft beer and gelato. The pizzas definitely have an authentic Italian taste.
Why Eat Here
Building your own pizza, especially when you don’t have to knead the dough, slice the meats and vegetables, and bake the pizza itself, is so much fun! The anticipation of the appearance, textures and flavors in the finished pizza is also part of charm of the dining experience at Your Pie.
Of course, your dining experience starts as soon as you step inside a Your Pie restaurant – and it’s a great start. Your first impression is the delectable smell of baking pizza, which will excite your palate and make your tummy grumble. Your eyes will also feast on the chic and contemporary interiors with a smattering of advertisements on the wall about the specials.
At the counter, you select the type of hand-tossed dough that will become the base of your personalized made-to-order, 10-inch, brick oven-baked pizza. The dough can be made of wheat, white, or gluten-free flour, each one of which is as delicious as the others, which can also be covered in half-and-half sauce (e.g., half white, half red).
Your next step is choose the sauce, which will be slathered generously on the dough, and the all-natural cheese that will go with your pizza. You can go to town, so to speak, with the toppings – there are 35 or so available – before signaling that your pizza is ready for the oven. You only need to wait 5-10 minutes for your pizza to be baked to perfection – or as many customers say it, the perfect balance between crispiness and chewiness.
For example, a customized pizza can be made of a wheat crush with buffalo sauce and mozzarella as base, as well as red onions, chicken, broccoli, bacon, and jalapenos. With so many choices, your palate will always have something to look forward to every time you come into a Your Pie restaurant.
But if you aren’t feeling creative, your pizza fix can come from the signature pies. There are usually seven Favorites signature pies, which are on the menu the whole year-round, and signature craft pizzas available on a seasonal basis. Your pizza experience will still be enjoyable considering that these are chef-crafted pizzas, which you can still customize by adding your own toppings.
But why stop with the pizza, no matter how delicious it may be? For a few dollars more, your pizza meal can be a combo meal with the addition of drink and chips, gelato, and/or side salad. For this reason, the pizza place usually has high school and college students enjoying their meals and snacks, even on weekends.
Did we mention that there’s even a free gelato day? You might just get lucky!
The menu also includes healthy chopped salads and Panini sandwiches, as well as the smooth and creamy Italian gelato. While the pizzas are filling in themselves, you will want to add one or two of the salads and sandwiches for sharing with your friends. Come here for lunches and dinners and your appetite will definitely be satisfied.
The alcoholic beverages selection is also impressive for a pizza joint. There are 10 craft beer taps that complement the national and regional brands of beers available. Since pizzas are great with cold beers, there’s also an abundance of adults from young professionals to mature executives in the crowd.
The outdoor seating is a great place for eating, too, especially when you have kids in tow. There are several games in the patio that will entertain them, aside from the television shows inside the pizza place.
