History

In 1979, Tim Martin opened the first Wetherspoon’s pub in Muswell Hill. The story has it that the Wetherspoons name was derived from Martin’s teacher in New Zealand who couldn’t control his primary school class. He once told the media that since he can’t control his pub and Wetherspoons can’t control his class, he named it after his former teacher – and besides, it has a nice ring to it.

What They’re Famous For

The Wetherspoon chain is a unique establishment in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. The pubs open early in the morning so guests can enjoy classic British and Irish breakfast fare including coffee, as well as open well into the evening with a full food and drinks menu. The result: Pub regulars can pop in from morning till evening and enjoy their familiar pub fare, a comforting feeling amidst the hustle and bustle of daily modern life.

Why Eat Here

The chain offers weekly food promotions where a type of classic pub fare takes center stage. If you can afford it – and you most likely can because of the low Wetherspoons prices – you can pay your neighborhood pub a visit just to enjoy the featured food and drinks.

There’s the Steak Club on Tuesdays, the Chicken Club with chicken wings on Wednesdays, the Curry Club with Indian curries offered on Thursdays, and the popular Fish Fridays.  The full food and drinks menu, nonetheless, are still available seven days a week along with the weekly food promotions.

The Wetherspoon pubs are also big on ales and ciders, two popular drinks on contemporary British and Irish pubs. There’s the Ale Festivals happening around March or April and October every year wherein guest ales are offered along with the house ales. There’s also the Cider Festival, usually happening in summer, where ciders of all types abound.

The buildings where the pubs are located are just as interesting – the chain usually converts unorthodox premises into its contemporary pubs. No matter the origins of the buildings, the common theme running through all of them is spacious areas and open plan layouts, which are also unusual in the pub industry.  The result: Guests have plenty of room to move around and mingle with others so there’s a sense of camaraderie in the air.

In most of the Wetherspoon pubs, the walls feature both local photographs and original paintings, a mix that contributes to the cozy and casual ambiance. The works of art also make for an interesting visit, such as when you’re admiring the works of Gwen John on the Haverford West location.

The service at Wetherspoon pubs is also known for being fast, even efficient, considering the number of people streaming in and out of the premises at any given time of the day and night. The staff members are also known for being attentive, friendly and accommodating, which make for a more enjoyable experience than in other pubs.

Of course, the full food and drinks menu is the main attraction in the pubs. The turkey pie earns raves for its crispy onion and sage pastry, tender turkey meat coupled with parsnips and carrots, and stuffing made of pork, cranberry and chestnut – and the combo is as delicious as can be. The rich and tasty gravy, puff pastry on top, and sides (i.e., choice of chips, mash, or peas) is the icing on the cake.

The vegetarians will rejoice at the vegetarian Wellington, a traditional pastry-wrapped meal on its own with spinach, mushrooms, cranberries, hazelnuts, and Brie – no beef! This is served with mash, chips, or gravy for the same price as the turkey pie.

The starters are also notable for their delicious flavors. Your choices include the favorite British pork and smoked bacon pate pâté with its own baguette and red onion marmalade soup of the day served with baguette; and mini-sized smoked salmon salad. These are filling on their own, if you have a small appetite, so be sure to leave room for desserts and drinks.

The desserts include milk honeycomb cheesecake, a memorable combo; traditional Christmas pudding because every day can be Christmas; and white chocolate and cranberry muffin. Pair your desserts with champagne, cocktails, or coffee, whatever catches your fancy on your visit.

The Wetherspoons pubs can be filled with young professionals, businessmen, and entrepreneurs kicking back their heels after a hard day at work. But you will also see families with their kids in tow, as well as the tourists looking for the quintessential pub experience in a more modern setting.
