History
Alan Yau founded Wagamama in Bloomsbury, London in 1992. Wagamama is a Japanese term that means naughty child or one that is willful and determined. Yau opened his restaurant at a time when the restaurant sector was not a good business investment. Although those times proved to be critical for food industry venture, they were able to sail through and in fact succeed rather quickly. Aside from the good quality dishes they offer, they attribute their success to the unique concept of their restaurants’ interior that pushed back and revived what had become an extremely boring industry. Also, the prices of the meals were also significantly lower than those of other London restaurants at the time. Today, with more than 20 years in the industry, they are still continuing their tradition of providing quality authentic Japanese cuisine in a unique and modern location at a reasonable cost.
What They’re Famous For?
Wagamama offers a wide selection of Japanese favorites. They are known to have the highest standards when it comes to their ingredients. Here are some of their most saleable dishes:
- Short Rib Ramen – a hot bowl of fresh noodles in light chicken broth topped with tender USDA Choice short rib on the bone, and garnished with fresh carrots mangetout, red onions, sweet potato and pea shoots.
- Yakitori Duck – tasty grilled duck leg seasoned with special Asian sauce served on top of steamed white rice and shredded cucumber, mint coriander and mooli salad, Asian pancakes and citrus yakitori sauce on the side.
- Teriyaki Beef Donburi – sticky white rice topped with beef brisket in teriyaki sauce, shredded carrots, pea shoots and onions, garnished with sesame seeds and served with kimchee on the side.
- Teriyaki Sirloin Steak Soba – soba noodles in curry oil topped with grilled tender sirloin steak, mangetout, bok choi, red onions, chillies and bean sprouts in teriyaki sauce and garnished with sesame seeds.
