History

Alan Stillman and Ben Benson opened the first Smith and Wollensky restaurant in 1977 on 49th Street and 3rd Avenue; Stillman is also the man behind TGI Friday’s. Each Smith and Wollensky has a slightly different menu but, as a review in the New York Times said it, the steaks will end all arguments. Many of the steakhouses also have the chain’s trademark green and white colors in their wooden exterior.

In 2007, the steakhouse chain was purchased by a group of investors, namely, Nick Valenti and Joachim Splichal of the Patina Restaurant Group as well as Bunker Hill Capital, a private equity firm based in Boston.

What It’s Famous For

Smith and Wollensky obviously takes pride in the world-class quality of their juicy, tender and flavorful steaks, which are hand-butchered and dry-aged on site before grilling.

Why Eat Here

The atmosphere at a Smith and Wollensky restaurant is more subdued than in its competitors, such as Peter Lugers and Morton’s, which means that you can actually carry on conversations with your fellow diners. While a steakhouse may not be the best venue for a first date, you can make an exception of a Smith and Wollensky steakhouse for this reason.  This is because the restaurant’s layout allows for more privacy than in other steakhouses.

The menu is only slightly different but the stars of the show are always the steaks, which come in different cuts including rib eye and filet mignon. Smith and Wollensky also offers seafood dishes for diners who want to enjoy non-meat food as well as an good selection of wines.

Be sure to make reservations since the place can be full even on weekdays; weekend reservations are a must because these are peak days. Walk-ins may be accommodated but it depends on the current capacity, which means the wait can be anywhere from 30 minutes to a few hours.

In terms of service, Smith and Wollensky has one of the best services in the industry. You will love it that the wait staff are attentive, friendly and knowledgeable without being too disruptive. You can ask them relevant questions about the menu and expect them to refill your drinks without asking.
