About Showmars
The United States is a melting pot of culture and, thus, of cuisines. The Greek-American cuisine is among the strongest as evidenced by the popularity of olive oil and olives, cheese, and filo pastry in home and gourmet cooking. This isn’t surprising, too, as the combination of Greek and American cuisine has a certain joie de vivre, a joy for life that characterizes the zest of the Greeks.
Among the more notable Greek-American restaurant chains is Showmars based in Charlotte, North Carolina. The chain serves a mix of Greek and American cuisines so there’s a rich mix of dishes and desserts made with filo pastry, olive oil, vegetables like eggplant and zucchini, yogurt, wines, and red and white meats, to name a few.
History
In 1982, George Couchell opened the first Showmars location in Monroe, North Carolina. He was in a good position to do so as he was a first-generation Greek immigrant who knew Greek cuisine well. He introduced Greek specialties including Souvlaki, Gyros, and Grecian Roast Chicken in addition to the traditional American dishes – truly, a mix that spelled success for the restaurant as there are now several branches in the chain.
What They’re Famous For
The Showmars chain is best known for its mix of Greek and American dishes and desserts on its extensive menu. Each restaurant offered breakfast and lunch fare, as well as a salad bar, a hot bar and several Greek specialties, thus, cementing its place in the industry as among the few chains with such a unique mix.
Why Eat Here
Showmars is a casual dining restaurant chain that caters to foodies who crave for the best in classic American and Greek dishes given the contemporary treatment. The casual atmosphere isn’t too casual as to be noisy, far from it, since students, businessmen and professionals as well as groups of family and friends are the main clientele. The noise level is below average so diners can enjoy both their great food and drinks as well as good conversations.
The staff members who deal with the customers are usually accommodating, even explaining the classic Greek dishes, as well as friendly, efficient and quick on service delivery. On peak hours, the service may be slower but not to the point of affecting food quality and fast delivery. The diners are assured that, indeed, their dishes and desserts will arrive at their table hot or cold depending on the desired quality.
The Greek and American menu is full of both familiar dishes and surprising entries. The trick is to combine both in a meal, if you’re a first-timer in a Showmars restaurant, so that your dining experience will be better for it. Even regular patrons apparently have their favorites yet still find new things about their familiar orders.
The highlights of the menu include:
- Salads, which can served with warm pita or in a tortilla bowl for a Tex-Mex touch, has plenty of choices for diners. These include the grilled chicken chef salad with grilled chicken served on a bed of iceberg lettuce, fresh romaine, and sliced tomatoes, cheddar cheese, red onions, and cheddar cheese; Greek salad with a choice of gyro meat or grilled chicken on a bed of iceberg lettuce, fresh romaine, feta cheese, and kalamata olives; and garden salad with iceberg lettuce, fresh romaine, slice tomatoes and cucumbers.
- Signature sandwiches such as old-fashioned cheeseburger, the Super C, and chicken breast sandwich, to name a few. The chain makes it a point to use only premium fresh patties for its sandwiches, as is the case of the cheeseburger, so diners will not waste their time and money on bland frozen patties. The sesame seed bun adds to the delicious flavors of the cheese, lettuce, and tomato.
- Pita sandwiches, like the signature sandwiches, can also be made into a combo. The Original Pita Burger consists of two fresh patties grilled to perfection with American cheese, onions lettuce as well as special tzatziki pita sauce. The other choices are the All-American Pita Burger, the Grilled Chicken Pita, and the Fresh Fish Fillet Pita, and Fresh Veggie Pita.
Be sure to order the traditional Greek favorites like gyro with thinly-sliced beef and lean roasted lamb seasoned with Greek spices; Souvlaki Somora with its marinated tenderloin medallions served with onions and grilled green peppers; and grilled chicken fiesta consisting of grilled marinated chicken breast with onions, green peppers, and special tzatziki pita sauce.
Seafood dinners, such as fresh flounder with coleslaw, tartar sauce, and hush puppies, are also available. The sides including onion rings, baked potato, and French fries.
The Showmars prices are friendly on the pockets, too. You can splurge on your meals and snacks when you find yourself in one of the chain’s restaurants. You can even bring your family and friends to your preferred location on a regular basis, especially on special occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, and even holidays.
