About Runza

The beauty of Runza restaurants partly lies in the sense of nostalgia that they bring to the table, so to speak.  The diners in a typical Runza restaurant is a mix of young and old people who have grown up or who have grown to love the unique sandwiches and burgers on the menu.

History

Alex and Sally Brening, a brother-sister tandem, opened the first Runza Drive-Inn in 1949 in Lincoln, Nebraska. Their menu then was simpler than it is today – Runza sandwiches, then and now the core of the offering, Polish dogs, hamburgers, foot-long hotdogs, pizza burgers, knockwurst, and French fries. Sally Brening coined the core product’s name and pronunciation, as well as trademarked it.

As of August 2017, the chain has 83 locations, most of which are in Nebraska and the others are in Colorado, Iowa, and Kansas.

What It’s Famous For

Runza sandwiches are the foundation upon which the chain continues to grow. While it may initially look unassuming, the first bite quickly changes the mind of first-timers about its culinary goodness!

Basically, Runza sandwiches are a type of pastry with a filling of ground beef, cabbage, and onions. The ground beef is seasoned with the chain’s proprietary blend of spices while the cabbage and onions used are of premium quality. These are then wrapped in freshly baked bread and voila! These are the sandwiches that Midwesterners have loved and continues to love for decades.

Why Eat Here

If you’re a first-time visitor to a Runza restaurant, you should try the world-famous Runza sandwiches first.  While it may be a uniquely Nebraskan thing, you will likely find that it has a universal appeal that can become addictive with the second bite.

The Original Runza Sandwich is widely considered as still the best because the flavors Midwesterners love are present in every bite. But since you’re already here, you should also expand your Runza repertoire and order one or two of the different versions on each visit.

Your choices include the Cheese Runza Sandwich, a cheesy concoction; the Swiss Mushroom Runza Sandwich, a creamy version; and the Spicy Jack Runza Sandwich, a zesty sandwich for tickling your palate. We also recommend the Cheeseburger Runza Sandwich, BBQ Bacon Runza Sandwich, and the BLT Runza Sandwich, all of which will fill your stomach. But if you’re on a diet yet you still want to enjoy a Runza, then you should go for the Mini Runza Sandwich.

These sandwiches may be delicious to the last bite but the Runza burgers are just as good!  The 100% fresh ground beef – no frozen patties here – are grilled to perfection before sandwiched between fresh buns made at the chain’s Rotella’s bakery. You can choose your own toppings, too.

The burger versions are just as numerous as the sandwich selection. You can choose from Cheeseburger, Double Cheeseburger, Swiss Mushroom Burger, Bacon Cheeseburger, Spicy Jack Burger, BBQ Bacon Swiss Burger, and Hamburger. Your kids can have the Jr. Cheeseburger and Jr. Swiss Mushroom Burger.

The classic crinkle-cut fries are must-haves, too, because these are always served fresh from the fryer – crisp, crunchy and flavorful with every bite. Even the onions are sliced by hand and double-dipped in batter before being fried. Don’t forget to order the onion dip because it takes the delicious flavors of the onion rings to another level.

The menu also features grilled chicken sandwiches, the healthier all-white meat version suitable for your cheat day.  These are available in Deluxe, BBQ, Buffalo, Spicy Jack, and Smothered versions.  The salads are great-tasting, too, with choices like Southwest Chicken Salad, Sweet Berry Chicken Salad, Chili Salad, and Side Salad.

The ordering system is fast and efficient, especially with the combo meals and the number system in place. Diners line up at the counter and say a number corresponding to the combo meal, such as a Cheese Runza Sandwich with French fries and drink.

The warm and fast customer service delivered by the wait staff combines the best of Midwestern hospitality and American efficiency.  While there’s no waiter service, the wait staff will deliver your food orders to your table upon request. You can also rely on them to provide assistance so that your dining experience becomes more enjoyable.

For a fast-food chain, the facilities and amenities are surprisingly well-maintained from the main dining area to the restrooms.  The tables are wiped clean as soon as the diners leave so there’s a sense of the place being clean always.
