About Prezzo
Italian cuisine is among the most popular cuisines enjoyed by people from many parts of the world, especially in places where Italian immigrants and their descendants have a strong presence. This isn’t surprising considering the delicious flavors, healthy ingredients, and beautiful presentation of Italian dishes and desserts from pastas to tiramisus.
Prezzo, a chain of Italian restaurants with locations across the United Kingdom and Ireland, is among the more popular of its kind. The chain is part of a family of restaurants including Café Uno, Chimichanga, and Ultimate Burger.
History
In November 2000, Jonathan Kaye opened the first Prezzo restaurant on New Oxford Street in London. As of this writing, there are more than 200 restaurants in the United States and Ireland. The first Ireland location was opened in February 2016 and it has since then become a major player in the restaurant industry.
The chain chooses old buildings of either historical or architectural value for its locations. These buildings are then re-purposed for restaurant purposes, such as in an old cinema-turned-restaurant in Beaconsfield in Buckinghamshire.
TPG, a private equity firm, took over the chain’s management in 2015. Jonathan Kaye, the founder, assumed a non-executive role in the management reorganization.
What They’re Famous For
Prezzo is a multi-awarded restaurant chain so guests are assured of outstanding Italian dishes and desserts, as well as superior service, casual yet stylish ambiance, and great facilities. The chain’s recognitions include “Best Casual Dining” during the 2011 Menu Innovation and Development Awards (MIDAS); the “Best Italian Restaurant Chain” during the 2007 Pizza and Pasta Association (PAPA) ceremony; and the “Best Pizza Chain” during the 2009 BBC Olive awards.
For his innovative ideas realized in the Prezzo chain, Jonathan Kaye was cited as the “Restaurateur of the Year” during the 2011 Caterer and Hotelkeeper Catey Awards.
The Prezzo menu includes a wide variety of Italian cuisine-inspired dishes from pastas, pizzas, and salads to meat and meat-free (i.e., vegetarian) dishes. There are also Light Options items, which are low-fat, low-calorie dishes served with a healthy salad.
Why Eat Here
As soon as you step inside the restaurant, you will be greeted warmly by the staff. You are well-advised to make a reservation, if possible, so that you can be immediately seated as soon as you arrive. You can just walk into the Prezzo restaurant of your choice, of course, but peak hours can mean non-available tables.
The chain offers waiter service – and the waiters are attentive, friendly and helpful without being obtrusive, too. You will be provided with the menu, which contains dozens of Italian-inspired offerings, almost as soon as you are seated. You can signal the waiter when you want to order or when you have questions about the dishes and desserts.
The waiters also appear to be well-trained in the fine arts of their job. You will not feel any pressure to hurry up with your meals and your table will not be cleared of the plates unless you get up from your seats.
Each restaurant has a unique décor so there’s no sense of dining in a mass market chain. The common theme in all the Prezzo restaurants, nonetheless, is a classic Italian restaurant with chic and contemporary touches with an airy feel. The tables have ample spaces between them so there’s no sense of being hemmed in by other diners.
The chain is also kid-friendly so bringing along your children isn’t a big issue. Be sure to tell the staff about your intention of bringing in children during the reservation process so that appropriate preparations can be made.
The casual dress code complements the casual yet chic ambiance so come in the proper attire, too. The noise level, even during peak hours, is average so you can still carry on conversations with your group.
Most of the dishes and desserts are tempting even on the menu. Keep in mind that the chain offers hearty Italian-inspired fare so be prepared for rich sauces, large portions, and hefty calories, as well as meat-abundant dishes from the pizzas and pastas. Fortunately, the menu also contains vegetarian and gluten-free dishes, such as the bruschetta with cherry tomatoes, basil, red onion and garlic on garlic bread; baked mushrooms stiffed with Italian and mozzarella cheese, onion and garlic; and mozzarella in breadcrumbs served with pomodoro sauce.
The Light Options menu is also notable for its lower-calorie, lower-fat offerings. For pizzas, for example, the light version meant a flatbread pizza base instead of the stone-baked dough base, aside from the smaller sizes on the former. Each order also comes with a mixed salad with low-calorie dressing.
The VIP version of the dishes are for guests who want more indulgence in their meals. The portions are larger, the pizza base is crispier, and the toppings are more numerous so there’s always the opportunity to share.
The Italian fare is best paired with wines and sparkling water, among other beverage offerings. You will not be pressured by the waiters – “upsold” in restaurant industry slang – to buy the wines, if you’re not into them yet. Your initial impression of the restaurant may be more on the upscale market but the reasonable Prezzo prices will put a lie to it.
