High school graduate Dan Lasaster and auto-dealer Norm Weise opened the first Ponderosa Steakhouse in Kokomo, Indiana in 1965. After learning about the success of Bonanza Steakhouse in the Southern region, Lasaster and Weise were inspired to open up their own restaurant offering budget steaks. Their first restaurant features a cafeteria-style service with a menu limited to steak served with baked potato, salad and dinner rolls. Ponderosa Steakhouse has under-went a lot of major changes since then. Today, their menu offers more variety of grilled items and other entrées to cater to the ever-changing preference of their patrons. They are also under new management of Homestyle Dining LLC. Although they have through a lot of changes through the years, they remained committed in providing their avid patrons with quality meals served in generous portions and offered at a valued cost.

Ponderosa Steakhouse are known for their Old West inspired home-style meals that features flavorful grilled items and hot side dishes. Here are some of their most notable items:
- BBQ Ribs – prime pork ribs marinated in their special mix of herbs and spices, slow cooked and grilled to tender and juicy perfection. Served with fries and house made coleslaw on the side.
