About MOD Pizza
The pizza industry is rife with pizzerias that advertise made-to-order pizzas but actually serve frozen pizzas heated in the oven or microwave, among other unscrupulous practices. But there are many pizzeria chains that deliver on their promise of made-to-order pizzas prepared from scratch and served hot from the oven – and MOD Super Fast Pizza LLC is definitely among the frontrunners!
MOD Pizza is a fast casual chain of pizzerias based in the United States. Over the years, it has garnered numerous industry recognitions for its excellent products and services, such as the one of the 50 Breakout Brands by Restaurant News (2013) and Fortune Magazine’s 20 Best Places to Work in Retail (2015).
History
In 2008, Scott and Ally Svenson established MOD Pizza in Seattle, Washington. The duo are also the co-founders of Seattle Coffee Company, a successful coffee company that was subsequently sold to Starbucks, as well as of Carluccio’s Ltd., a successful Italian restaurant; both were in the United Kingdom.
When they returned to Bellevue, Washington, their hometown, they were frustrated by the absence of restaurants that offered healthy, affordable meals served quickly. Along with James Markham, they co-founded MOD Pizza with the first location in Union Square. Markham is also the brains behind the chain’s house recipes.
Currently, the chain has more than 200 restaurants in the United States and United Kingdom. According to its management, the chain is strongly committed to its employees and community – or as the company says it, MOD Pizzas is “more about the people than the pizza”.
What They’re Famous For
The “MOD” in the chain’s name is an acronym for “Made on Demand” so the pizzas are, indeed, made according to order, a point of pride for the company and for its employees. The pizzas, which are the stars of the menu, are made with organic dough for the crust and premium ingredients for the toppings. These are baked for three minutes in 800-degree ovens, a process that ensures the crust is perfectly cooked and the toppings retain their core flavors.
Why Eat Here
QSR News, a publication of the restaurant trade, calls it the equivalent of Chipotle in the pizza industry for good reasons. You line up at the lengthy counter where the ingredients and displayed and choose the ones that you want included in your pizza. You can watch the preparation process to ensure that, indeed, your personalized pizza is prepped just the way you like it.
The artisan-style pizzas are then baked over high heat and served hot from the oven. The price remains the same regardless of the number of toppings you place on your pizza, so you can either limit yourself for a reduced calorie intake or go crazy. You may also build your own salads, which follow the same practices as the pizzas except for the baking part.
The opportunity to create your own pizza is a definite draw for most of its customers. You will find that the fruits and vegetables toppings are fresh, the sauces are flavorful, and the cheeses are delicious so your personalized pizzas always taste great.
You may also skip the create-your-own pizza experience yet still enjoy the MOD Pizza experience by choosing the in-house pizzas. Since these are made according to the chefs’ recipes, you can be assured that every bite is like an explosion of flavors in your mouth. There are 10 classic pizzas as well as seasonal pizzas, which are available in Mini, MOD and Mega sizes.
The choices in toppings may initially overwhelm the first-time visitor but it’s so easy that after a few minutes, the choices fall into place. The sauces include BBQ sauce, garlic rub, extra virgin olive oil, and pesto; the cheeses are feta, mozzarella, parmesan, ricotta, and dairy-free; and the veggies include artichokes, black olives, and green bell peppers, to name a few from the 39-plus choices. The meats include anchovies, bacon, grilled chicken, ground beef, and mild Italian sauces.
Aside from the food, MOD Pizza restaurants also serve thick and creamy hand-spun milkshakes, beer and wine, and fountain drinks. The alcoholic drinks are obviously only available to people of legal drinking age while the milkshakes and fountain drinks are available for everybody. The restaurants usually have families with kids in tow since these are family-friendly places with free Wi-Fi connection and televisions scattered around the dining rooms.
The layout and décor of each MOD Pizza restaurant is unique but there are also several similarities between restaurants. The simple décor combined with the functional vibe complements the do-it-yourself theme while the local inspirations are also evident.
The crew members aren’t chit-chatty but it’s for the best since customers want fast and efficient service, not people who delay your culinary gratification by making small talk. But they walk new customers through the process, if requested, so that’s a plus.
