About MGM Grand Buffet

The same thing can probably be said of the MGM Grand Buffet. Sometimes it’s great, at other times it’s just so-so, and there are days when the dining experience is just plain bad. It’s truly a gamble, which somehow suits a place that’s regarded as the largest casino in the city with 171,500 square feet of casino area.

A Brief History

It does seem fitting that the hotel is called the MGM Grand. It opened in 1993, and it has remained the largest single hotel in the US with more than 6,800 rooms. They started out trying to make it as a destination hotel, as they built a theme park for kids who weren’t old enough to enjoy the casinos. Unfortunately, the theme park didn’t do so well.

They also started out with a focus on the Wizard of Oz theme, and that wasn’t such a hit either. By the turn of the millennium every hint of the Oz theme had been removed, and now the place resonates with the Art Deco vibe of classic Hollywood.

That’s what they’re trying to do with the MGM Grand Buffet. It hasn’t been spectacularly successful, but it is slowly earning some positive reviews. The quality of the service isn’t quite consistent yet, but they do offer certain advantages that some diners may value highly.

What They’re Famous For

Some people think that the MGM Grand Buffet is famous because it’s like you’re gambling every time you come here to dine. People have many different types of experiences here. Some come here and come out as winners, as they love the $33 weekend brunch with bottomless mimosas.

Lots of people enjoy the crab legs here. They’re taken straighten out of the boiling pot and onto the plate. Don’t worry about piling them up on your plate, as others here will want to do the same. You may want to get some shrimp as well, as you won’t have to peel them. The seafood section is perhaps the best thing here, as many of the dishes can be made to order just for you.

Admittedly, the selection here can be limited especially when compared to the other buffets on the Strip. However, quite a few people do appreciate some of the offerings. The Italian section has lots of fans for the fresh pizza, cheese-stuffed pasta, and chicken parm. You also have the reliable American comfort foods like mac and cheese, fried chicken and mashed potatoes.

In addition, the so-so reputation of the MGM Grand also offers one other notable benefit. Most of the time, you don’t have to wait that long to get your food. When you’re hungry, that’s an important advantage.

The flipside of this is that there’s always the chance that things go wrong. Nobody’s perfect, but that’s an adage that perfectly demonstrated by the MGM Grand Buffet. You can go online and find real reviews with bad things to say—and you know the negative reviews are real because often they come with smartphone photographic evidence.

Sometimes not just the food is bad, but the service may be not terrific either. It may take some time for you to get the food because the staff people aren’t very quick in cleaning the tables or clearing the dishes.

Why Eat Here?

Maybe the level of your MGM Grand Buffet enjoyment depends greatly on your expectations. It’s true that some of the more renowned buffets on the Strip outclass this place in terms of food quality and variety. So if you expect this place to match those other buffets, you’ll be sorely disappointed.

It’s not fair to have such expectations, because the prices are much more reasonable here. Yes, it’s also true that in some places they offer better food and a larger selection for basically the same prices. But you may not always find those places easily.

So why eat here? One good reason is if you’re already staying at the MGM Grand Hotel. Why go to another place if you’re hungry and want a quick bite? Here you can get your food quickly, and yet you can enjoy a leisurely meal as you soak in the relaxing atmosphere. With crab legs and bottomless mimosas, it’s always a fun time.

Besides, it’s somewhat of an adventure. It’s like gambling. Will you get a terrific time, or will you be disappointed? You don’t risk a lot since the prices are reasonable, but you sure have lots to gain. The MGM Grand Buffet is always unpredictable, and you may get in on days when the food is fantastic and the service is actually quick!
