Pizza may be Italian in origin but it has been adopted by Americans, thanks to the popularity of the dish brought by the Italian immigrants to the country. The round, sometimes square, pie is characterized by a crust made from basic dough, a tomato-based sauce, and toppings like vegetables, processed meat, and cheese. The types may vary from thin to thick crust pizza, from Margherite to meat lovers’ delight, and from cheddar cheese to mozzarella but these basic ingredients remain.
The Mazzio’s Italian Eatery chain is among the more popular pizzerias in the United States. Aside from the reasonable Mazzio’s prices, the chain is also known for its specialty pizzas with truly outstanding flavors.

In 1961, Ken Selby opened his restaurant, The Pizza Parlor, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Aside from his full-time job as a school teacher, he also managed the pizzeria, which is still in operation as Mazzio’s today. In 1965, he quit his job to focus on The Pizza Parlor as well as opened a second location, which he named as Ken’s Pizza, also in Tulsa; the restaurant is also still in operation as a Mazzio’s.
In the late 1970s, he formulates a new business approach that required a larger casual dining restaurant with an expanded menu including pizzas with a thicker crust, sub sandwiches, and salads. The result: Mazzio’s Pizza. Today, there are more than 160 restaurants across ten states in the United States.
What They’re Famous For
Mazzio’s Pizza obviously specializes in pizzas and, judging by the rave reviews from most of its diners, the chain delivers on its claim of being the best pizzeria this side of the pizza-loving world. Aside from the numerous specialty pizzas available, the restaurants also offer several types of pasta dishes and sandwiches, as well as specialty items in each location.
Why Eat Here
Mazzio’s Pizza restaurants offer its customers the opportunity to build their own pizza. Of course, the pizzas can only be made from the available types of crust, sauces, meats and vegetables, and cheese so weird combinations aren’t possible. Like most pizzerias offering build-your-own pizza services, the process is simple yet efficient:
- Choose your desired size – small (9”), medium (12”), or large (14”). The small size can be shared by two people with moderate appetites.
- Select your preferred crust. The small and medium sizes come in either the original or thin crust while the large size comes in thin, original, deep pan, and stuffed crust. You may want to experiment with the combinations of the crust, sauce and toppings because the texture and flavor profiles will be different. The stuffed crust pizza, for example, will likely be cheesier because of the added filling.
- Choose your preferred pizza sauce. The choices include Mazzio’s Traditional Red, Sweet Red Marinara, Ken’s Spicy Red, Alfredo, Garlic Basil Olive Oil, and Barbecue Sauce with each one having distinctive flavors. You may find Ken’s Spicy Red a better option when you’re looking to set your palate on fire, for example, while the Mazzio’s Traditional Red sauce is a classic.
- Select your pizza toppings. There are at least a dozen choices so you will find a combination of toppings that will satisfy your cravings for a vegetarian pizza or a meat lover’s pizza. These include artichokes, black olives, green peppers, jalapeños, mushrooms, fresh mushrooms, pineapple, and red onions, as well as bacon, Canadian bacon, beef, ham, chicken, sausage, Italian sausage, and pepperoni.
The staff members will bake your personalized pizza in the restaurant’s oven. You don’t have to wait too long although the deep pan pizza can take 30-45 minutes to bake according to the chain’s standards. You can either wait for it while in the restaurant or just come back for it, especially when you have errands to run around town. You may also avail of the chain’s takeout and delivery services, which are just as efficient as the dine-in services.
Mazzio’s Pizza restaurants also offer specialty pizzas that already come pre-assembled, so to speak, with their ingredients. The Ken’s Supreme is a bestseller because of its savory combination of the chain’s signature Spicy Red sauce, sausage, pepperoni, green peppers, red onions, and mushrooms. The vegetarians’ choice is the Fresh Veggie filled with the goodness of mushrooms, tomatoes, green peppers, red onions, toasted herbs, and black olives. The Combo pizza comes with sausage, pepperoni, red onions, green peppers, black olives, and mushrooms.
Alcohol isn’t served although there are sodas available. There are no outdoor seating and free Wi-Fi but when you’re enjoying great pizza, these don’t matter anymore.
Keep in mind that the Mazzio’s Pizza restaurants don’t have waiter service. Diners must then line up at the counter for their orders and pay with cash or credit cards. Kids and groups of friends and families are welcome to the restaurants, especially as there are large tables available and the large space can accommodate dozens of diners.
