Max and Erma’s was founded by Todd Barnum and Barry Zacks in 1972. The co-founders purchased a local tavern formerly owned and operated by Max and Erma Visocnik but they decided to retain the original name. They created the themed restaurant, which had a sundae bar made from a converted bathtub as its focus.
In April 2008, the restaurant chain was purchased by G&R Acquisition Inc., a Pittsburgh-based equity investor, for $10.2 million. But by October 2009, the company declared bankruptcy before being acquired by American Blue Ribbon Holdings in the following year; American Blue Ribbon Holdings is also the owner of Bakers Square and Village Inn restaurant chains.
Today, the chain is owned by Glacier Restaurant Group, which purchased it from American Blue Ribbon Holdings in January 2016.
What It’s Famous For
Max and Erma’s restaurants pride themselves on award-winning gourmet burgers and sandwiches. Among its most popular are the Tortilla Burger, Garbage Burger, Windy City Brat Burger, Colossal Meatball Burger, and Sunny Side Burger. These burgers feature fresh (i.e., never frozen) choice Midwestern beef as well as premium ingredients including vegetables, bacon, and cheese.
Why Eat Here
Max and Erma’s restaurants are among the more popular casual burger joints, thanks to their wide range of innovative hamburgers that the likes of McDonald’s cannot copy. Every single hamburger on the menu is a must-try although the Tortilla Burger and Garbage Burner are the must-tries for their sheer deliciousness in every bite. The Tortilla Soup is also a must-try, thanks to its refreshing and filling quality.
Such is the wide range of options at Max and Erma’s restaurants that virtually every type of contemporary American favorites are covered. Choices include salads like Apple Harvest, Avocado Cobb, and Grilled Chicken Sta. Fe; soups like French Onion Au Gratin, Soup of the Day, and Tortilla Soup; sandwiches like the Tomato Mozzarella Chicken, Reuben Grill, and Pulled Pork BBQ; steaks like Laredo Steak, Simple Sirloin, Sizzling Steaks and Mushrooms; and sides including Shrimp Scampi, New England Fish and Chips, and Lemon Herb Grilled Salmon; and desserts like Erma’s Fresh Baked Cookies, Chocolate Cake ala Mode, and the All-you-can-eat Sundae Bar, of course.
You will enjoy your meal in a casual and relaxed atmosphere where the diners are likely to be young professionals, couples, and families.
