History of Legal Sea Foods

Legal Sea Foods traces its history all the way back to 1904 when Harry Berkowitz opened a grocery store called the Legal Cash Market, known for giving loyal customers legal stamps aka trading stamps. This proved successful until the 1940s when competition became tight. In order to work around this, Harry’s son George opened a fish market called Legal Sea Foods in 1950, offering fresh fish and fish-and-chips to go. By 1968 George and the family opened a restaurant in an adjacent empty space that specialized in fish, chips, shrimp, scallops and clams. Customers sat on picnic tables and were always guaranteed fresh fish from the adjacent fish market. The restaurant has since grown, changed and expanded over the decades, with 35 locations dotted along the East Coast.
