About Ledo Pizza

Ledo Pizza has carved an enviable niche in the dog-eat-dog pizza industry. The pizzeria restaurant chain has more than 100 restaurants across several states including Maryland, West Virginia, Florida, Virginia, and South Carolina – truly, a testament to its success!

History

Robert Beall and Thomas Marcos founded Ledo Pizza in 1955 with the first location in Adelphi, Maryland particularly in the Adelphi Shopping Center. The corporate headquarters are in Annapolis, Maryland.

Emphasis must be made that the original location, now known as Tommy Marcos’ Ledo Restaurant, isn’t featured on the Ledo Pizza System’s online restaurant finder. This is due to the legal dispute between the Marcos family and the Ledo Pizza chain, both of which actually uses the same family recipe for their pizzas – the former for its TJ Elliots restaurant in Bowie, Maryland and the latter for its pizzerias.

What They’re Famous For

Unlike many of its competitors, the pizzas at Ledo Pizza have a square shape. This was due to the abundance of square-shaped pans when the first location opened and when the round-shaped pans were still new. The pizzeria chain chose to stick with the square pans even as their competitors shifted to round pans, partly to stay true to its roots and partly to give its customers more value for their money.

In fact, the chain’s logo reflects its commitment to it, “Ledo Pizza is square, because we don’t cut corners.”

Aside from the square shape, the pizzas are also known for their ultra-thin crust, thick pepperoni slices, and sweet sauce as well as the smoked provolone cheese as topping. Many diners have an issue with the greasiness of the pizzas but most think of it as a positive aspect of the Ledo Pizza experience.

Why Eat Here

The square-shaped pizzas are the divas of the menu – and it shows because most of the diners have at least one pie on their tables. Guests can create their own pizzas, which have freshly-made dough and sauce to complement the fresh, quality and natural toppings.  The choices in toppings are aplenty – meats, vegetables and cheeses included – that you can just go to town and stop worrying about the calories, too.

You can be as conventional or unconventional in your choices, too, without the servers raising their eyebrows. The choices in meats include anchovies, bacon, hamburger, ham, pepperoni, meatballs, roasted chicken, sausage, and salami, which covers just about everything on pizzas. The vegetables include baby arugula, spinach, basil, banana peppers, black olives, green peppers, mushrooms, jalapenos, onions, Roma tomatoes, and roasted grape tomatoes. The cheeses include blue cheese and feta cheese, which complement the slight sweetness of the thick, rich tomato sauce.

You also have the choice of the chain’s delicious craft pizzas, which the cooks have pre-assembled and cooked before being served by the servers. These run the gamut from the Chicken Feta Pizza with Ledo sauce, black olives, roasted grape tomatoes and chicken with feta cheese topping; Buffalo Chicken Pizza with Buffalo sauce, roasted chicken, and Provolone cheese and blue cheese crumbles; and Hotlanta BBQ with yellow BBQ sauce, regular bacon and sliced chicken, jalapenos, and Provolone cheese to the Sweet Baby-Q Chicken with its Sweet Baby Rya’s BBQ sauce, pre-cooked bacon, and chicken with Provolone cheese.

The craft pizzas are also popular among the guests because there’s no need to experiment with the flavors and textures. You can order one of the pizzas, taste it, and decide whether you like it or not and proceed to the next craft pizza. You will then have something familiar to come back to whenever you’re in Ledo Pizza.

Like many pizzerias, there’s also a vegetarian option, the Veg-In. This contains the sweet Ledo sauce topped by tomatoes, spinach, red onions, fresh basil, jalapenos, and black olives – and no cheese.  The gluten-free pizzas are just as delectable with their toppings similar to the regular pizzas – the main difference lies in the gluten-free dough used for the crust.

The cheese lovers in the group will likely find the Pomodoro Bianco and the Pop Pie as yummy, goeey treats. The Pomodoro Bianco contains five cheese with roasted grape tomatoes, fresh basil, and baby arugula with parmesan cheese garnishing while the Pop Pie has Fontina, Provolone, Parmesan, and Asiago cheeses with toppings like fresh spinach, fresh basil, and tomatoes.
