Juan Francisco Ochoa opened the first El Pollo Loco restaurant in Guasave, Sinaloa, Mexico in 1975. The name, by the way, means The Crazy Chicken in the Spanish language.
El Pollo Loco soon became a chain of restaurants popular in northern Mexico. By 1980, it expanded into the United States with the first international location in Los Angeles, California.
The chain has undergone several changes in ownership, from Denny’s acquisition in 1983 to its acquisition by American Securities Capital Partners in 1999 and by Trimaran Capital Partners in 2005. By July 2014, El Pollo Loco went public.
What They’re Famous For
El Pollo Loco’s speciality dishes are the Mexican chicken entrees. These are whole chickens marinated in a citrus-based mix and then grilled over open flame, a cooking method that brings out the tangy flavors of the marinade; according to management, the marinade itself consists of fruit juices, garlic, herbs and spices. The grilled chicken is then cut and served with chicken meals, tacos, burritos, quesadillas, and salads.
Why Eat Here
El Pollo Loco restaurants are fast-casual dining places so these have a relaxed atmosphere that encourages laidback gatherings of family and friends. When you enter one of its restaurants, you will likely immediately notice that people are enjoying their food and drinks, even using their fingers to enjoy the chicken. The laidback vibe means that there’s no fussiness, much less snobbishness, in El Pollo Loco restaurants.
The El Pollo Loco staff members are friendly, too, as well as efficient and fast on their feet. Yes, they are crazy about delivering a good dining experience for their customers and it is such commitment to good customer service that will keep you coming back for more.
Of course, the delectable food is the main reason for coming to your neighborhood El Pollo Loco restaurant as many times as possible every week! Let’s start with the citrus-marinated chicken that can be ordered either as a mix-in for your favorite Mexicn-style dish or in different cuts. You will love it because it’s just so juicy, flavorful and tender – no, there are no dry chicken meat at El Pollo Loco – that you won’t look at fire-grilled chicken the same way afterwards.
There are several chicken dish combos available. You can order the chicken meals, which are offered in 2-piece, 3-piece, and 4-piece meal types, as well as the fire-grilled chicken in cuts like breast, wing, leg and thigh. These are arguably the most popular items because El Pollo Loco is, after all, known for its great chicken.
The tostadas are flavorful and filling, thanks to their generous portions. Your choices include the Double Chicken Tostada Salad and the Classic Tostada Salad, both of which have generous chunks of grilled chicken mixed in with fresh vegetables and other ingredients.
The burritos selection is more extensive, proof that El Pollo Loco is serious about its Mexican food. The choices include Chipotle Chicken Avocado Burrito, Chicken Avocado Burrito, Original BRC Burrito, Classic Chicken Burrito, and Ranchero Burrito. These are considered as all-in-one-bite meals, a great option for people on the go who want hefty meals without the hassles.
The quesadilla selection isn’t really a selection since there’s only one for now, the Chicken Avocado Overstuffed Quesadilla. But it’s a large quesadilla, too, as well as delicious and we know that quality usually trumps quantity. Order it and be satisfied and full for the next couple of hours until the next El Pollo Loco cravings hit.
There are several sides to choose from as well, and these are usually served in fairly large portions. The choices include rice, pinto beans, black beans, corn, broccoli, macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes and gravy, loco side salad, and coleslaw. These sides complement the savory flavors of the grilled chicken so your meals are always satisfying in more ways than one.
The extras are just as impressive with the likes of tortilla chips, chips and guacamole, creamy cilantro dressing, light creamy cilantro dressing, low fat citrus vinaigrette dressing, house salsa, salsa roja, avocado salsa, and sliced jalapeno peppers.
What’s a meal without the drinks? El Pollo Loco has an extensive drinks menu that includes several favorites like Cherry Coke, Diet Coke and Coke as well as Dr. Pepper, Barq’s Root Beer, Fanta Orange, Fuze Sweetened Raspberry Iced Tea, Gold Peak Fresh-Brewed Mango Passion Fruit Tea, Gold Peak Fresh-Brewed Unsweetened Tea, Gold Peak Fresh-Brewed Sweetened Tea, and Horchata, to name a few.
For dessert, the churros are a must-have! These are crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside with the perfect ratio of cinnamon and sugar.
