About Dairy Queen

And we aren’t surprised either! With millions of Americans having the proverbial sweet tooth and a near addiction to Dairy Queen’s soft serve treats, the chain will likely endure for a few more generations to come.

History

John Fremont McCullough and his son, Alex, developed the soft serve ice cream formula. The father-and-son team convinced Sherb Noble to offer their products in the latter’s ice cream shop in Kankakee, Illinois. Noble and the McCullough then opened the first Dairy Queen store in June 22, 1940 in Joliet, Illinois.

Early on in its operations, the company has used the franchise system in its expansion plans. Worldwide, there are more than 6,400 shops in the United States and in more than 20 other countries.

In the United States, the chain is known as American Dairy Queen Corporation. The chain’s parent company is Dairy Queen.

What They’re Known For

Dairy Queen is the best place to go for soft serve ice cream with just about every imaginable sweet toppings you can imagine. Aside from these sweet treats, the chain also offers malts and milkshakes, banana splits, parfaits, slush, sundaes, and blended coffee drinks, to name a few. The menu also has chicken strips, hamburgers, and other cooked foods.

Why Eat Here

Dairy Queen may be closely associated with the charms of small town America but its shops are in major cities across the United States. People who have a craving for its sweet treats, whether it’s the signature blizzard or the frozen yogurt creations, will find a Dairy Queen around the corner, literally and figuratively.

On weekends, the Dairy Queen shops will be packed to the rafters with parents and their children as well as employees and students enjoying their free days. The lines can be long and the wait longer than on weekdays but it is well worth the time and effort. The staff, fortunately, are lightning-quick on their feet so the customers get their food and drinks quicker than expected.

Of course, everybody who come to Dairy Queen is there for the delicious food and drinks. Let’s start with the burgers, sandwiches and hot dogs, the staples of fast-food restaurants, which are always flavorful.

The burgers can be ordered on their own or ordered as a combo, such as the $5 and $6 lunch. The Deluxe Cheeseburger Lunch, for example, consists of a cheeseburger, fries, drink and sundae while the KB BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger Lunch has the same side, drink and dessert but with the soul-satisfying bacon cheeseburger.

The GrillBurger line includes Bacon Cheese, Flame Thrower, and Cheese GrillBurger while the DQ Bakes Artisan-style Sandwiches line includes Chicken Bacon Ranch, Turkey BLT, and Kansas City BBQ Pulled Pork. Every single one of these items is worth your money!

Other foods include chicken sandwiches, shrimp basket, and chili hot dogs. We like the shrimp basket because it’s a refreshing contrast to the sweetness of the dessert items. We love the chicken strip baskets, too, which come in three flavors – plain, honey barbecue, and honey hot glazed – and served with toasted bread, fries and dip.

Of course, Dairy Queen is Dairy Queen because of its dairy-based sweet treats! The Blizzards are so thick that these can be turned upside-down and not a drop will fall to the floor. The choices are aplenty, too, including the regular features and the seasonal offerings.

The Blizzard choices include Limited Time Offers (Oreo Hot Cocoa, Dipped Strawberry, Snickerdoodle Cookie Dough, and Reese’s Outrageous); Signature Creations (Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Salted Caramel Truffle, Turtle Pecan Cluster, and Brownie Extreme); Candy Classics (Oreo Cookie, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup, Butterfinger, and M&M’s Milk Chocolate); and Royal (Royal Oreo and Royal New York Cheesecake). To say that these treats are like sweet heaven piled upon yet another sweet heaven is an understatement, but all of them aren’t cloyingly sweet that you can’t finish a single serving.

And if your sweet tooth isn’t satisfied yet, Dairy Queen has more desserts in store! There are hot desserts a la mode like triple chocolate brownie and fudge stuffed cookie; cones and sundaes in different flavors like hot fudge, caramel, strawberry, and pineapple; and royal treats like banana split and parfait; and novelties like Dilly Bar, Buster Bar, and DQ Sandwich.

For birthdays and parties, Dairy Queen also has several cakes, dessert pizzas, and blizzard cakes. These cakes will definitely find their way, so to speak, to your home – no melting – so your family and friends will feel like they, too, have been with you to your recent Dairy Queen run.
