History

Established by Scott Jennings in Tempe, Arizona in 1998, Cheba Hut is known for its munchies that are created as a combination of great food and counterculture. In fact, its Downtown Denver restaurant is in near proximity from Native Roots, a popular cannabis dispensary.

At present, there are several locations in Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico, Oregon, and Wisconsin.

What They’re Famous For

Cheba Hut is known for its so-called Toasted concept wherein the dishes and desserts, even the décor, are inspired by cannabis. The counterculture evident in the menu is balanced by the delicious quality of the food.

Most of these locations offer craft beers made by neighborhood breweries, as well as a wide range of sandwiches, salads and munchies. The Rice Krispy treats are a must-have because of their crispy, crunchy quality.

Why Eat Here

Cheba Hut isn’t your usual sandwich shop in the university belt. Instead, it’s so much more with its cannabis-inspired menu – don’t worry as the food and drinks aren’t actually infused with cannabis, just inspired by it, as far as anybody knows – and décor.

In fact, there are more than 30 signature sandwiches on the menu, as well as the munchies, a wide range of treats that will surely fill up your tummy, perhaps even make you laugh because of the pun. For example, the sandwich sizes are nug (4 inches), pinner (8 inches), and blunt (12 inches), which are terms used for cannabis. Even the sandwiches are named after pot strains!

When you enter a Cheba Hut, your first impression will likely be the wonderful smell coming from the kitchen, particularly the fresh-baked mouthwatering brownies. You have plenty of stimulation to take in from the giant joint swinging from the ceiling, the stickers on the glass windows, and the Zig-Zag swag to the rock ‘n roll sounds of Jimmy Hendrix and Led Zeppelin.

But it’s the menu items that will hold your attention and whet your appetite! The sandwiches include choices for meat lovers and vegetarians while the salads, munchies and drinks are sure to please everybody.

The Chicken and Turkey category include spicy chicken (Jamaican Red), chicken ranch (White Widow), Greek chicken (Apollo 13), chicken marinara (Panama Red), teriyaki chicken (Thai Stick), California club (Kali Mist), and BBQ chicken (Acapulco Gold), as well as a turkey, bacon and mushroom sandwich (The Kind). The Veggie sandwiches are usually a combination of sandwiches and another ingredient, such as Humboldt (guacamole), Griefo (cream cheese), and Power Plant (hummus and guacamole) – and there’s even a peanut butter and jelly sandwich (Sticky Icky).

What’s a cannabis-inspired joint if there are no meat-based sandwiches? At Cheba Hut, the choices include BBQ roast beef (Chronic), Italian (La Canna), roast beef (KGB), tuna melt (Pac Blue), pork (5-0), meatballs (Bomb), and turkey and roast beef (G-13). If you want the sweet sandwich type, then we suggest the Pakalolo, a combination of ham, pineapple and Swiss cheese.

The salads are surprisingly popular, too, thanks to their generous portions and delicious flavors. There are also meat and vegetarian choices like Chicken Bacon Salad, Antipasto Salad, Greek Salad with Chicken, House Side Salad, and Tuna Salad. These are great choices, too, for people who are watching their intake but who still want to enjoy Cheba Hut’s fare.

And then there are the munchies! These are so good that even those with little to no love for sweet treats will find them to their liking. The Rice Krispie Bar is the perfect balance between crunchy and chewy while the brownies are scrumptious to the last bite without being too sweet. There are also chocolate chip cookies, goo balls, pretzel nuggets, French onion soup, and chips –and these are just the perfect combination of sweet and savory.

The drinks, which are known as Cotton Mouth Cures, include fountain drinks, iced tea and Kool Aid drinks. Of course, there are the adult beverages including craft beers for adults to enjoy with their food.

If you’re the adventurous or curious type, you can also ask the staff about the “secret stash” of sandwiches in each location. For example, in the Rainbow Boulevard location, the “secret sandwiches” include Duke Nukem (banana, bacon and peanut butter) and Area 51 (extra tomato and sprouts, pepper jack cheese, parmesan cheese, Greek dressing, and oregano.

Customers need not fear about a permissive atmosphere in Cheba Hut’s locations because these are as family-friendly as a cannabis-joint can be given the current attitude toward the herb.
