History

Brewers Fayre started as The Farmer Arms, which opened in Preston in 1979. In the next 15 years, the single location grew into a chain of pubs with 280 locations. But it wasn’t all roses – the chain had its share of problems including the launch and cessation of several sister brands and the changes in ownership.

The Brewers Fayre chain as we know it today has about 130 fully-licensed pubs-and-restaurants in the United Kingdom. Whitbread is its current owner.

The overall feel of every Brewers Fayre pub is a traditional English pub obviously. The characteristic décor includes the use of warm contrasting colors, the combination of wooden paneling and stonework, and even stained glass. There are Victorian-style lampposts, too, especially in the pub’s parking areas while many historical locations are known for their unique names, usually a take on the building’s former use (e.g., Pirnhall Inn for the Brewers Fayre outside of Stirling); newer locations are simply known as Brewers Fayre.

Unlike the traditional British pub, however, Brewers Fayre has kid-friendly, fully-supervised, Dennis the Menace-themed play areas. Every play area typically has an amazing tree house and a toddlers’ zone, as well as staff members who supervise the daily activities from Monday to Friday. Rates and times apply.

For starters, the bestselling items are the buttermilk chicken cheesy nachos (tortilla chips with cheese sauce, buttermilk chicken goujons, and chili salsa) and the Deep South-inspired buffalo goujons with hot sauce coating and blue cheese dip. The entrées include The Sloppy Joe Burger (60-ounce burger with cheddar cheese, spicy beef chili, and cheese sauce topping); The Brewers Cobb Salad (grilled chicken breast, bacon, and boiled egg with Stilton cheese and ranch dressing); and the Chicken ‘N’ Bacon Waffles (crisp waffles, buttermilk chicken goujons, and smoked bacon with maple syrup topping).

The sides can be meals, too, if you’re watching your waistline. The choices include smothered chicken and bacon bites and mac n’ cheese bites. The desserts are so scrumptious you may want to eat them first – Toffee Apple Waffles (sweet waffles with sticky salted toffee apples and cookie dough ice cream) and Oreo Sundae (cookie dough ice cream with crushed Oreo cookies, chocolate sauce, and whipped cream).
