In 1936, Bob Wian established Bob’s Pantry in Glendale California. Bob’s Pantry became “Bob’s, Home of the Big Boy Hamburger” before being known simply as “Bob’s Big Boy”. While the brand was known as Big Boy nationally, it retained its Bob’s Big Boy name as a local chain; Robert C. Wian Enterprises was its franchisor. In 1987, Elias Brothers, a major franchise operator, bought the chain and managed it until its 2000 bankruptcy. Robert Liggett, Jr., a known investor, purchased and renamed it Big Boy Restaurants International. Today, it either owns or franchises 96 restaurants in the United States as well as licenses 279 restaurants in Japan.
What They’re Famous For
The Big Boy menu is a delectable hodgepodge of breakfast items and dinner combos as well as burgers, sandwiches, salads, and desserts. Unlike most of their competitors, Big Boy restaurants usually have several items contributed from others in their system although Bob Wian’s signature hamburgers are served in all locations. Notable examples include Frisch’s Swiss Miss and Brawny Lad hamburgers; Shoney’s Hot Fudge Ice Cream Cake and Slim Jim sandwich; Eat’n Park’s Strawberry Pie was introduced by Eat’n Park. Keep in mind that while many of these items were offered in most restaurants, each location can change the item’s name, tweak its original recipe, and even rebrand it when leaving the chain. You can ask a restaurant in another area about the availability of your favorite items in another restaurant, when necessary to satisfy your cravings.
