History

In 1989, Chuck Anderson, Dirk Rambo, and James Young opened their first Abuelo’s restaurant in Amarillo, Texas. Their goal: To provide diners with delectable Mexican food and drinks served within a casual Mexican setting with American efficiency. Today, the chain consists of 38 restaurants in 13 states across the United States – and counting since more restaurant openings are being planned. You will find that Executive Chef Luis Sanchez’ culinary creations are among the best in the casual dining industry, which isn’t surprising considering that he worked for a few of America’s best restaurants.

What They’re Famous For

The Tex-Mex cuisine in Abuelo’s restaurants are the perfect blend between homemade goodness and gourmet appeal, a combo that diners say hit the right spot in their palates and stomachs. You can dish up your tortilla soup, add your selection of rice, beans and enchiladas, and assemble your tacos, which means you can make your own dishes – or just let the professionals do it on your behalf. You have to try the weird-sounding yet lip-smacking shredded beef enchilada with sour cream sauce, too.

Why Eat Here

In many of Abuelo’s locations, you will find that Tex-Mex restaurants are a dime a dozen especially in Texas. But Abuelo’s restaurants stand out from the competition because of their extensive menu from appetizers to desserts and drinks; ambiance evocative of a posh courtyard in Mexico; and fast service. You should order the dishes for which the chain is famous for, such as the tortilla soup, a Southwest staple, as well as the Fundido del Mar, a beautiful combo of scallops, shrimp, roasted red peppers, poblanos, and mushrooms with a generous white wine-cheese sauce topping. Your culinary adventures in Tex-Mex cuisine will find their match here, especially with the budget-friendly Abuelo’s prices.
