In 1991, John Carter opened the first Wayback Burgers restaurant in Newark, Delaware; it was then known as Jake’s Hamburgers. By the early 2000s, several more locations were opened, which also led to changing the name from Jake’s Hamburgers to Jake’s Wayback Burgers in 2010.
To date, the Wayback Burgers chain has nearly 100 restaurants with dozens more in development. The restaurants are spread across the United States particularly in New England, New York, Ohio, California, Texas, and Florida. There are also several locations abroad including in Argentina, Saudi Arabia, and Brunei.
What They’re Famous For
Wayback Burgers, a fast casual burger-centric restaurant chain, serves several types of hamburgers. The beef patties are made fresh (i.e., never frozen) and the burgers are hand-crafted resulting in better burgers that will give burgers from other fast-food joints a run for their money. There are also several sandwiches with natural grilled chicken, nitrate-free hotdogs, and meat-based chili options, as well as delicious bites like mac ‘n cheese bites, onion rings, and Irish nachos.
The hand-dipped milkshakes at Wayback Burgers are made with fresh whole milk and come in several great flavors. Plus, guests can build their own milkshakes from the available options.
Why Eat Here
There’s no better reason to dine in your neighborhood Wayback Burgers than the delectable burgers! You have so many choices that it can be a challenge to give your order but, fortunately, the staff members are more than happy to explain them. You get the feeling that the staff wants you to get a better burger and will do everything in their power to give it to you.
The burger choices include the Wayback Classic Burger, the Rodeo Burger, the Double Bacon Burger, and the Cheeesy Burger, as well as a few regional burgers like the Carolina Burger. These are all yummy, of course, since these are chef-driven burgers.
If you have a distinct palate or you’re craving for your own burger creation, you can ask the staff for the build-your-own-burger service. You can craft your own single burger or double burger from the available ingredients. You needn’t worry about your weird combos because these will likely not raise eyebrows.
The menu also features several types of sandwiches and chicken dishes. These include cheesesteak, WB cod sandwich, chicken BLT, chicken tenders, and Buffalo chicken sandwich, as well as craft-your-own grilled chicken, veggie burger, and crispy chicken. These are as filling as they are flavorful, thanks to their large sizes and generous fillings so you will always get the best value for your money.
The sides menu is limited but what Wayback Burgers lacks in quantity it more than makes up for in quality. The mac ‘n cheese bites are creamy and cheesy so these are as satisfying as can be. The onion rings have a sweet batter and a crispy texture that makes biting into them such a joy. The Irish nachos, chili cheese fries, and bacon cheese fries can be addictive so much so that many diners actually order two of them.
For healthier options, Wayback Burgers has chicken Caesar salad and garden salad. These salads have fresh vegetables and flavorful dressings so these aren’t your usual sloppy salads. You may want to get everything on your tray – a burger, a side or two, and a salad for a complete meal, if you’re up for it.
Think about your waistline later because the hand-dipped milkshakes are irresistible. These are made with Blue Bunny ice cream and milk and comes in several flavors like Vanilla, Chocolate, Strawberry, Black & White, Coffee, Café Mocha, Oreo Mud Pie, Oreo Mint, Chocolate Banana, Strawberry Banana, and Cookies ‘n Cream.
The drinks are standard with choices like Pepsi fountain drinks, Dole lemonade, iced tea, and bottled water.
The customer service at Wayback Burgers is better, too, than in your usual fast-food joint. Your orders can be delivered to your table – there’s waiter service. You will find plenty of food for your lunch and dinner, too.
Wayback Burgers restaurants have a diner look and feel, as well as a relaxed yet vibrant atmosphere. The crowd consists of a mix of college students, teenagers, employees, and even seniors apparently looking for better burgers. The noise level tends to be average even on peak hours.
There are no alcohol served so there’s no happy hour, too. Many restaurants have outdoor seating while most, if not all, have free Wi-Fi access for diners.
