About Uncle Julio’s

When you’re at an Uncle Julio’s restaurant, you will find the relaxed vibe conducive to your full enjoyment of the authentic Mexican food prepared by professional chefs. The Uncle Julio’s prices are budget-friendly, too, you can enjoy Mexican food anytime you want.

History

The first Uncle Julio’s restaurant opened its doors in November 1986 in Dallas, Texas. Thanks to its authentic Mexican food, it quickly gained a loyal following that, in turn, lead to opening more restaurants. At present, the chain has 29 restaurants in Texas, Illinois, Georgia, Maryland, Florida, Virginia, and Tennessee.

What They’re Known For

Uncle Julio’s has established a reputation for offering delicious authentic Mexican food made from fresh, natural ingredients and made using Mexican cooking expertise. While the Mexican recipes may be genuine, the ingredients have been locally grown and/or sourced and, thus, there’s an element of sustainability.

The restaurant chain is also known for The Swirl, a concoction of frozen margarita and sangria.

Why Eat Here

If you have a hankering for authentic Mexican foo, then you should find the nearest Uncle Julio’s restaurant. Here, you will be immediately greeted by the alluring aroma of the mesquite grilled fajitas – surely, as good an introduction into the menu as any! You will also appreciate the warm and welcoming atmosphere where families and friends can enjoy flavorful Mexican food.

When ordering, you may want to start with the fajitas, the most popular item on the menu. The 21-day aged skirt steak and the fresh chicken breast, which have been marinated in the chain’s signature marinade, are grilled over an open flame to perfection. These are then served with fresh guacamole, pico de gallo, frijoles a la charra, Mexican rice, and freshly made flour tortillas.

Aside from steak and chicken fajitas, Uncle Julio’s restaurants also serve shrimp and vegetable fajitas perfect for people with specific dietary needs. There are also a few varieties of the meat fajitas, such as the carnitas Azteca, the honey chipotle chicken, and chicken and steak.

When at Uncle Julio’s, don’t forget to partake of its signature salsa, too. Every order comes with complimentary chips that complement that great flavors of the onions, tomatoes, and jalapeños. These ingredients are first roasted over an open flame resulting in a smoky flavor in the salsa while the addition of a spice blend and fresh cilantro enhances it.

(Don’t worry as Uncle Julio’s signature salsa isn’t too spicy.)

The wide range of appetizers can pass for a complete meal if you order one of each kind. The shrimp appetizers include Ceviche Fresca, a combination of the sea’s bounty like shrimps, scallops and tilapia in a marinade of lime and lemon juice, onions, tomatoes, and cilantro. There’s also the Habanero Honey Bacon Shrimp, a sweet and salty dish made of four jumbo shrimp with a stuffing of queso fresco and minced habanero, a wrapping of smoked bacon, and a topping of honey chipotle glaze. Talk about mouthwatering!

Uncle Julio’s is a Mexican restaurant so it stands to reason that there are nachos, tamales and quesadillas on the menu. Mama Julio’s Nachos is a delicious dish with refried beans, fresh jalapeños, and a blend of cheddar and Monterey Jack cheeses, which are served with sour cream and fresh guacamole. This can be ordered with either chicken fajita or beef fajita for a more varied appetizer.

The hand-rolled tamales, which are made with homemade masa and served in a corn husk like the traditional way, is available in two versions. Four Pork Tamales is served with either salsa carne or New Mexico red sauce while Four Chicken Tamales comes with your choice in hatch chili sauce or salsa verde.

The quesadillas versions include pulled chicken (sautéed pulled chicken with onions, tomatoes, and Monterey Jack served with fresh guacamole and sour cream), chicken fajita and bee fajita, veggie (sautéed peppers, onions, and mushrooms with Monterey Jack cheese), and grilled shrimp (served with onions, mushrooms and peppers).

The fresh guacamole served at Uncle Julio’s isn’t the lame guacamole served in other restaurants either. It’s made fresh daily from fresh Haas avocados and comes in two sizes – small and large. You can also order the tableside guacamole, which can be made spicier with fresh chopped jalapenos.

The menu also includes salads (Chicken Fajita Cobb, Acapulco Seafood Salad, and Classic Taco Salad) with house-made dressings (ranch, citrus vinaigrette, and 3 pepper ranch).   The chicken tortilla soup is a heart dish with chicken broth, vegetables, avocado, queso fresco, and tortilla strips; it’s available in cup or bowl.

And always order The Swirl Margarita, Uncle Julio’s signature drink! The refreshing flavors of margarita combines beautifully with the intoxicating feel of frozen sangria.
