In 1948, Glen Bell opened the predecessor of Taco Bell, a hotdog stand known as Bell’s Drive-in in San Bernardino, California. But he observed that the Mexican café across the street was more popular, thanks to its hard shell tacos, so he approached its owners and eventually learned the taco-making process. He opened Taco-Tia, a taco stand, in the early 1950s and later on El Taco restaurants.
In 1962, Bell opened the first Taco Bell restaurant, and it was so successful that by 1967, there were 100 restaurants in the chain. In 1978, PepsiCo acquired Taco Bell and subsequently spun it off to Yum! Brands.
Nowadays, there are more than 7,000 restaurants in the United States and abroad. The chain serves more than two billion customer annually, as well as considered as among the largest fast-food restaurant chains in the world.
What They’re Famous For
Taco Bell serves a wide range of Mexican-inspired food including tacos, quesadillas, burritos, and nachos. There are also specialty and novelty items as well as the hugely popular value menu items. Think of Taco Bell as the go-to place for satisfying your anytime-of-the-day cravings for Mexican comfort food without spending wads of cash.
Why Eat Here
Taco Bell is such a popular fast-food chain that it’s nearly always filled with customers happily munching away on their food! There are several dishes that are worthy of your time and money – the tricky part is in choosing which ones will satisfy your hunger, perhaps your midnight cravings. Indeed, Taco Bell is well-known for catering to late night diners.
Let’s start with soft tacos, an uncomplicated yet irresistible taco made with soft tortilla. You will quickly become attached to the explosive flavors of seasoned beef, cheese, and lettuce in the soft tacos, not to mention that you can customize it to your heart’s desire. You can add beans, black beans, jalapeno peppers, onions, potatoes, seasoned fries, and seasoned rice – the list is longer, trust us – so your soft taco looks like the Goliath of tacos.
The Mexican pizza is heaven in several slices of crisp pizza shell topped with seasoned beef and refried beans followed by another crisp pizza shell on top and, finally, the top layer of pizza sauce, tomatoes, and a three-cheese blend. It doesn’t look like a traditional pizza but you enjoy every last slice anyway because, dang it, it’s so good!
Did we mention that you can make it more decadent than it already is? Yes, you can! You can ask the crew member to upgrade it by adding jalapeno sauce, guacamole, nacho cheese sauce, or reduced fat sour cream. You may also ask for add-ons like seasoned fries, shredded chicken, and/or lettuce – and you won’t get weird looks either because at Taco Bell, it seems like anything goes with your food.
These are just two of the most popular dishes at Taco Bell, of course. We highly recommend favorites like the Cinnamon Twists, the Nacho Cheese Doritos Locos Taco Supreme, the Rolled Chicken Tacos, the Cool Ranch Doritos Taco, the Double Cheesy Gordita Crunch, the Double Decker Taco, and the Nacho Supreme.
The Value Menu consists of food priced at just $1 each and it’s among the aspects of operations that makes Taco Bell what it is – a beloved fast-food joint for getting your fix at nearly anytime of the day and night. There’s plenty of choices, too, including Beefy Fritos Burrito, Shredded Chicken Mini Quesadilla, Cheesy Bean and Rice Burrito, and Triple Layer Nachos. While these may seem like junk food, keep in mind that these are filling food that fulfils a basic need.
Taco Bell has also announced a dedicated vegetarian menu, the first of its kind in the chain. The menu includes a Vegetarian Crunchwrap Supreme (black beans instead of meat); the 7-Layer Burrito; and the Vegetarian Quesarito.
Emphasis must be made that the vegetarian menu isn’t exactly new since there are also numerous vegetarian and vegan ingredients and items already present. Instead, Taco Bell wanted to unify these ingredients into a single menu and, thus, make the extensive menu easier to understand and navigate. Taco Bell has a casual ambiance that attracts a wide range of customers, from children with their parents looking for affordable meals for groups to young professionals, college students, and entrepreneurs looking for a quick meal. The chain is a great place for lunch, dinner and late night snacks, too, such as after a hard night of partying.
