There’s no doubt about – Starbucks is the star of the coffeehouse industry! The brand is synonymous with hot and cold coffee drinks that it has even become a status symbol in many countries –if you can afford to buy a Starbucks drink, then you have made it, so to speak. Starbucks prices are definitely premium, but most people love their coffee products, so the price is well worth it.

Of course, the Starbucks drinks aren’t as expensive as some people think but these aren’t exactly the cheapest in the block either. The quality of the drinks coupled with the customization options make every dollar and drip worth it, fortunately.

Zev Siegl, Jerry Baldwin, and Gordon Bowker originally wanted to sell coffee beans and coffee roasting equipment, an idea inspired by Alfred Peet, a coffee roasting entrepreneur who also taught them about his original roasting style. On March 31, 1971, the three founders opened the first Starbucks coffee shop in Seattle, Washington where it remains among the city’s most recognizable institutions.

But “Starbucks” wasn’t the founders’ original choice for the name of the coffee shop. Other names like Cargo House and Pequod were also considered and discarded because these were neither powerful nor catchy enough – the trio wanted a brand name starting with the “ST” sound as it sounded more powerful. Bowker suggested “Starbuck” since it started with “ST” and it was easy to recall; the name was actually a character in a Moby Dick novel.

Currently, Starbucks is a publicly-traded corporation (NASDAQ: SBUX) as well as listed on the S&P 500 Component, the S&P 100 Component, and the NASDAQ-100 Component. The chain also has more than 23,760 coffee shops across the United States as well as in countries as diverse as Canada, Mexico, Japan, and South Korea, to name a few. Many of the Starbucks products, such as bottled beverages, roasted coffee beans, and mugs and tumblers, are also sold in retail shops including grocery stores.

What They’re Famous For

Starbucks is best known for its dark-roasted coffee beans that impart their distinctive flavor on the wide variety of hot and coffee beverages sold in its coffee shops. Nearly everything that can be ordered in a coffeehouse can be ordered at Starbucks, from the classic espresso, cappuccino and latte to the hip coffee-based drinks like macchiatos. Customers can also customize their orders, from the milk to the whipped cream topping.

Why Eat Here

Starbucks is a hip and trendy chain of coffeehouses, a fact that every first-timer should keep in mind when entering the doors of a Starbucks shop. The crowd – and there’s usually a crowd of people looking for their caffeine fix – usually consists of college students, young professionals and entrepreneurs, and even a few local and international celebrities. Many of the people who frequent Starbucks are also colorful personalities in their own right so the vibe is almost always vibrant.

There’s an underlying buzz, too, thanks to the tables of people talking about anything and everything. Suffice it to say that people looking for a modern coffeehouse with a dynamic atmosphere, fast service, and diverse drinks will find Starbucks heaven on earth in many ways.

Let’s talk about the drinks and there are literally dozens of possible combinations! Every customer can customize his or her order, from the base coffee drink to the extra ingredients, such as skim milk, whipped cream, and flavorings. Such is the sheer number of choices that a first-timer is well-advised to take his or her time before making the order.

Don’t worry though if you can’t make up your mind quickly. The baristas are usually patient in waiting for your specific order but you may also want to know your choice before lining up – the quicker you can give your order, the faster you can enjoy your drinks, not to mention that you won’t be holding up the line.

The drinks menu includes a diverse range of hot and cold drinks, most of which have coffee as their base. There are also espresso, micro-ground instant coffee, café latte, and frappuccinos, as well as fruit juices and tea-based drinks (i.e., loose leaf and in bags). The chain also launches seasonal drinks, such as spiced pumpkin drinks during Halloween.

Starbucks isn’t just about the drinks, however. The food menu includes several types of hot and cold sandwiches, chips and crackers, and pastries, which perfectly complement the drinks. The menu may also feature several brands of wine and beer although these are only available in selected locations; Starbucks, nonetheless, doesn’t consider itself as a bar.

The service at Starbucks has always been excellent and it can be attributed to the staff members’ excellent training in coffee-making and customer service. Regardless of your order, you have the assurance that you will be provided with the same level of service as the others who have more expensive orders or more orders. Even if you come in your pajamas, as many people are wont to do, you will still be regarded as a valued customer.
