Steve Paperno, the founder of Sharky’s Woodfired Mexican Grill, opened the first location in Sherman Oaks, California in 1992. His vision behind it: To combine Mexican flavors with innovative recipes and with healthy lifestyle practices. He observed that most of the restaurants he went to offered dishes with processed ingredients and lacked healthy options.
The chain now consists of 30 restaurants most of which are located in the counties of Los Angeles, Orange and Ventura, all in the State of California.
What They’re Known For
The Sharky’s chain is known for its Mexican-inspired menu and its emphasis on the use of fresh, organic and natural ingredients.
Why Eat Here
Many, if not most, of the Sharky’s restaurants aren’t on the beach but there’s a strong seaside vibe that customers get as soon as they walk in the door. This isn’t surprising as the chain, after all, had its start in Southern California, a region known for its casual beach vibe.
The interiors contribute to the restaurants’ casual vibe with their woof and metal furnishings, brick wall accents, and bright color accents on the stools, bar frames, and colored tiles. The walls may also feature photo wall art. The restaurants are usually decorated uniquely but with the quintessential Sharky’s touches.
According to the chain’s management, only organic, fresh and local ingredients are used in the dishes and desserts – and it shows in the excellent quality of the food. The ingredients include cage-free eggs, non-GMO corn and canola oil, all-natural Angus beef and chicken breast, wild-caught fish, and organic quinoa, yams, tofu, greens, beans and rice.
In accordance with its healthy lifestyle advocacy, the chain also doesn’t use lard and monosodium glutamate (MSG) in its dishes. The dishes are also always made fresh to order so these are served piping hot, as needed.
In keeping with its Mexican-inspired menu, customers can choose from a wide range of tacos, burritos, and breakfast entrées. The burritos are typically filled with organic beans and rice as well as mesquite-grilled beef or chicken. The tacos are made even more delicious with marinated and mesquite-grilled tofu tacos while the salads are made of organic quinoa, greens and herbs.
Indeed, such is the variety of dishes in Sharky’s menu that there are several vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options!
The breakfast entrées are scrumptious that customers often order them even during lunch. These include the Numex Scramble, Chilaquilles, Stacked Breakfast Enchiladas, Wild Salmon and Avocado Toast, Breakfast Power Plate, and Slow-Cooked Pork Hash.
There are also traditional breakfast options if you’re not into adventurous flavors. The choices include Organic Whole Grain Pancakes, Organic Quinoa Oatmeal, Cinnamon Brioche French Toast, and Organic Granola and Yogurt. Sides are available, too, such as bacon, toast, sausage links, fresh fruits, and breakfast potatoes.
Check the menu for seasonal items, such as the summer salads. The Summer Harvest Salad, for example, is a healthy and refreshing mix of quinoa, organic greens, zucchini, squash, fire-roasted corn, tomato, radish, golden raisins, pickled onions, toasted almonds, and goat cheese with cilantro buttermilk dressing.
Try the Organic Roasted Vegetable Salad, a seasonal offering as well, because it’s as healthy as it’s delicious. The organic beets, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, sweet potato, summer corn, and carrots complement each other well, as well as complement the walnut-cilantro vinaigrette. You can add your choice in protein, such as shrimp, grilled chicken, or Alaska salmon.
The BBQ Chicken Salad is a favorite because of its flavorful taste, thanks to the grilled chicken, roasted summer corn, pecans, and fresh sweet peppers with a creamy chipotle dressing; these are served with organic mixed greens and corn tortilla strips. Every bite gives a fresh feeling and delicious flavor so it’s the perfect summer salad.
And what’s better with Mexican food than refreshing lemonade? The options include watermelon basil, basil, and strawberry cilantro. If lemonade isn’t in your agenda, you can try the iced teas with flavors like hibiscus ginger green tea.
Every Sharky’s restaurant offers several vegan and vegetarian options aside from the numerous meat-based options. There’s no need to make reservations and dress up, thanks to the casual dining ambiance. Cash and credit cards are accepted for payment; Google Pay is available in most locations. Kids and groups, both large and small, are welcome.
