On June 12, 1972, Al Copeland opened the first Popeyes restaurant in Arabi, Louisiana; then, it was called Chicken on the Run, a restaurant that Copeland envisioned would be a solid competitor against Colonel Sanders-founded Kentucky Fried Chicken. After several months, however, the restaurant closed due to slow sales.

Copeland opened another restaurant called Popeyes Mighty Good Chicken that he subsequently renamed as Popeyes Famous Fried Chicken in 1975. Other names by which Popeyes was known include Popeyes Chicken & Biscuits and Popeyes Famous Fried Chicken & Biscuits.

The American multinational chain is currently known as Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, Inc. It’s a subsidiary of Restaurants Brands International, a Toronto-based company with various restaurant brands in its portfolio.

As of 2018, the chain has more than 3,100 restaurants in the United States and in 30 countries worldwide. Most of the Popeyes restaurants are franchised with only about 30 restaurants being company-owned.

What They’re Famous For

Popeyes is best known for its fried chicken available in mild and spicy flavors. The menu also features several sides (e.g., rice and red beans, a Louisiana favorite), mashed potatoes, and Cajun rice and Cajun fries. There are Southern staples, too, such as jambalaya and po’boy sandwiches, which most locations offer especially in areas with a strong Popeyes following.

Why Eat Here

Popeyes may be a fast-food restaurant chain offering many fast-food staples, particularly fried chicken, but its culinary roots stretch back more than 300 years! Indeed, it takes pride in giving Louisiana Creole cooking wider exposure across the world and it’s a thrust that makes its stand out from its competition.

Louisiana Creole cuisine, by the way, blends several international cuisines to create distinctive dishes that aren’t found in other areas of the United States. The cuisine’s influences come from French, Spanish, Amerindian, West African, and Haitian cuisines with strong contributions from German and Italian cooking styles.  The Cajun and Creole dishes are known for their complex flavors, spicy tastes, and colourful presentation, too.

The bottom line: You likely won’t find bland food at Popeyes! Prepare your taste buds for an explosive dining experience even when you’re munching on apparently ordinary fried chicken dishes.  Popeyes likes to surprise and we love it!

Of course, the fried chicken is the main reason people flock to Popeyes on a regular basis. This isn’t your regular fast-food fried chicken because every piece has been marinated in Popeyes’ signature marinade for 12 hours or more. Every piece is then battered and breaded before being deep-fried.

The result: The fried chicken’s bold and bright flavors seep from its crunchy and crispy skin to its succulent, juicy ad tender meat! There’s no blandness whatsoever to it so much so that it can become quite addictive.

Popeyes offers two versions of its famous fried chicken. First, the Spicy fried chicken has a spicier flavor, thanks to its Cajun-inspired spicy chicken marinade, which makes it a favorite among Louisiana Creole cooking fans. Second, the Mild fried chicken appeals to people who crave the crispy dish but don’t have the spice tolerance.

Both fried chicken dishes are best enjoyed with one – or more, if you’re really hungry – of Popeyes side and a buttery biscuit. With the trio, you will feel full and energized for the day’s activities, too, not to mention that one of life’s greatest pleasures is to enjoy delicious food whenever you can.

Rice being a Louisiana staple – or at least, it’s a staple in Cajun and Creole cuisine – it’s also available in several of Popeyes’ dishes. The Cajun Rice Platter is a great choice since it contains carbs, proteins and fat, the trio of macronutrients needed by the body every day, and it’s as delectable as rice dishes go. The plate already contains Cajun rice – or cooked rice seasoned well with spices and topped with corn and diced bell peppers – and a single piece of hot Cajun fried chicken.

The fried chicken menu also features mild tenders and Cajun pepper nuggets; the latter has been marinated in a spicy mix of habanero and cayenne peppers.

We highly recommend the Cajun fish, a whole fillet white fish cooked in Cajun style; the calamari, a plate of squid rings seasoned with spices; and Creole Burger, which consists of spice-marinated fried chicken served on a bed of bun, lettuce and tomato and drizzled with creamy Creole sauce.  We love it, too, that Popeyes restaurant staff members are always friendly, helpful and accommodating, especially toward parents with kids in tow and the elderly. The restaurants are cozy, too, without feeling claustrophobic.
