About Papa Murphy’s

One of the most interesting concepts in existence today is the take and bake types of pizza chains. All you’ll get from them is an uncooked pizza pie, meant to be baked in your very own kitchen oven. They’ll prepare the pizza for you but you’re the one responsible for actually cooking them. It’s not really different from the other restaurant concepts that will let you cook your own food but because you’re required to do so at home, you’re offered a homemade pizza chain-quality product.

Papa Murphy’s prices, product quality, and wide availability make it one of the best-known take and bake pizza chains in the country. So if you want a quicker, easier, and maybe more affordable way to get a store-quality homemade pizza, you might want to check them out.

History

Papa Murphy’s traces its roots back to 1981 when Papa Aldo’s Pizza was founded in Oregon. A couple of years later, Murphy’s Pizza was born in Petaluma, California. The two chains operated independently until they were acquired and merged by Terry Collins in 1995. It was then incorporated as Papa Murphy’s International.

Both chains started out as take and bake operations but it was really Murphy’s that started everything. When it was founded by Robert Graham, it was an effort to discover how one of his convenience store’s vendors were able to sell uncooked pizzas.

He knew that home ovens aren’t capable of reaching the high temperatures required for baking pizza doughs, so he inquired about the process. When he was told that it will cost him $10,000, he just embarked on discovering the recipe himself. After trying 250 recipes, he found one that can be cooked perfectly at 425 degrees. And this is where Murphy’s got its start.

Unfortunately, Graham’s inexperience in the restaurant industry made the business difficult for him. As luck would have it, though, he met Collins in 1988 and he helped him grow his chain. Soon after, they acquired Papa Aldo’s Pizza, more for its strong management rather than its low-quality and bland products. Together, they make up a perfect balance of strong products and solid management practices.

Proving the effectiveness of Papa Murphy’s formula is the fact that it won awards for being the best pizza chain in the country repeatedly over the years. It won Restaurants and Institutions Magazine’s poll in 2003 and then once again in 2006. They also won Pizza Today’s Chain of the Year honors in 2001, 2006, 2008, and 2009 as well as Zagat’s Fast-Food Survey from 2010 to 2012. Then in 2013, it was awarded by the QSR Magazine their Franchisee Satisfaction Award. The following year, they honored Papa Murphy’s as their Top Pizza Chain and recognized the quality and nutrition of the chain’s food.

What They’re Famous For

Since the primary items sold at Papa Murphy’s are pizzas, it’s just expected that they’re most famous for them. However, it’s not just the customizable and bake-at-home nature of their products that made them well-known. In fact, there are quite a few great draws this chain has that keeps them at the top of the game.

At the top of this list is their use of the freshest ingredients. You’re guaranteed that this promise is true because they don’t have freezers in their stores. Their dough is made from scratch in every location, every morning. Their mozzarella is hand-grated in stores and their vegetables are hand-sliced every day as well. With this method, you can be sure that the quality of ingredients you’ll get is top-notch.

Why Eat Here

With so many pizza chains that will bake the pizza for you, why should you give Papa Murphy’s a try? Here are a few compelling reasons you might want to take into consideration.
