About Johnny Rockets

This is the very concept that Johnny Rockets took on and took off with. They took on the responsibility to continue the legacy and heritage of vintage diners, serving up tasty diner staples the same way things were done in the 1950s.

While Johnny Rockets’ prices aren’t exactly the same as a regular diner, they’re also not that bad. With the quality of ingredients and the interiors the brand comes with, they’re worth the extra cost.

History

Founded in 1986 by Ronn Teitelbaum, Johnny Rockets was inspired by an actual diner that is still currently in operation in West Los Angeles, The Apple Pan. Teitelbaum created Johnny Rockets as a ‘non-gimmicky’ recreation of the malt shops of his childhood. He capitalized on his generation’s nostalgia and appealed to the longing of the younger generations to experience the glamor of the yesteryears. The first restaurant opened on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles.

In 2007, RedZone Capital acquired the chain. They then expanded the operation and opened smaller stores that they called Johnny Rockets Express. They also launched a global campaign and started working on opening stores all over the world.

Despite changing hands in 2013 when Sun Capital Partners bought the chain, the global expansion of Johnny Rockets continued. In 2017, they opened their 30th store right in time for the brand’s 30th anniversary. In total, they have more than 320 locations worldwide.

Another impressive thing to note about this chain is the fact that they are constantly taking steps to stay relevant in the current dining landscape. They intend to corner drive-ins and open drive-thrus in order to cater to more customers as the mall scene struggle with the retail crisis America seems to be having right now. It’s a testament to their flexibility and ability to respond quickly to challenges.

What They’re Famous For

With a tagline that states ‘Burgers, Shakes, Fries, and Fun’, it’s easy to guess what Johnny Rockets is best known for. Even their interiors will clue you in that it’s best known for their diner food.

Dubbed as over-the-top American food, you can expect tasty classic comfort foods at Johnny Rockets. However, unlike regular diners, quality is highly prioritized here. They make sure to only use the freshest ingredients, for starters. Their beef is never frozen and burgers are grilled-to-order. So when they get to your table, they’re hot and tasty.

Their commitment to replicating the 1950s diner setup is also a major draw for some folks. Their interiors are fully outfitted to showcase the era. From the red vinyl seats, chrome accents, individual jukebox stations, Coca-Cola advertisements, and even the pin-up art, the space screams vintage.

In some locations, the servers even do some song and dance numbers. Lastly, they always make a smiley face on a paper plate when serving French Fries, just like the waitresses of old school diners in the movies. There’s a good chance that you’ll feel like you’re in a throwback scene from a musical or TV show when you step in one of their locations.

Their hand-spun milkshakes are also some of their main attractions. They bring not just the boys in the yard but also girls and everybody else. They’re considered as some of the main purveyors of the said cold treat, so if you’re visiting one of their fun locations, make sure to order a glass.

Why Eat Here

If you’re asking why you should eat at Johnny Rockets, most folks will answer with a ‘why not?’ This diner has a lot to offer, so it’s certainly a great place to dine in. However, if you need more convincing, here are some reasons why this chain is worth a visit:

1. It will let you step back in time.

From their interiors to their food, Johnny Rockets will certainly flood you with good old nostalgia. Even if you didn’t really get to experience the 50s in all of its glory, this chain will let you relive it, even through just a meal.

2. Their milkshakes are worth the calories.

By serving up hand-spun milkshakes, you can already tell that their cold treats are a cut above the rest. Such a preparation method promises better ingredients and more refined results. It’s also more nostalgic since it’s how milkshakes were prepared back in the day.
