Man cannot live on bread alone and, thus, the sandwich was created. While it may be a tongue-in-cheek view of sandwiches, we can agree that sandwiches are the most convenient way of getting carbs, proteins, and fat as well as vitamins and minerals with every bite. Jimmy John’s prices are higher than the industry-leader Subway, however, their quality is consider to be higher as well so the price may very well be worth it.

No wonder then that sandwich-centric shops like Jimmy John’s continue to thrive even in the dog-eat-dog worldwide food industry! Sandwiches aren’t just an American staple but a worldwide staple that will endure for as long as there’s bread, meat and vegetables to make them.

After Jimmy John Liautaud graduated in 1982, he opened a sandwich shop in Charleston, Illinois. His father, who presented him with a choice between starting a business and joining the military after he graduated the second goat in his class, provided the $25,000 initial capital.

In the succeeding years, Jimmy John’s rapidly expanded. As of March 2017, the chain has nearly 3,000 stores and the management has expressed expansion plans to open thousands more.

In September 2016, Roark Capital Group acquired the majority stake in the Jimmy John’s franchise. Liautaud still owns 35% ownership of the company at present.

What They’re Famous For

The sandwiches are the most popular items at Jimmy John’s and it’s partly because of the unique quality of its bread. The bread is baked fresh daily in every store so it retains its freshness longer; with a central commissary, the travel time will affect freshness and quality.

Jimmy John’s bakes its bread in the French style, thus, it has a slightly crispy exterior and a chewy, moist center. It’s the perfect background for the contrast of textures and tastes once the meat, vegetables, and cheese are added. Take note that on many sandwiches, a bit of the center of the bread can be scooped out to make room for the fillings.

Why Eat Here

We have to say that the bread can be your single reason to visit Jimmy John’s but it wouldn’t be right to dismiss the excellent quality, flavor-wise, of the sandwiches. We love that the sandwiches are built in such a way that these hold together so well – no falling apart at the sides, no falling down.  We can eat them without worrying about making too much of a mess.

Be sure to ask for the 7-grain traditional bread, an inch-thick hearty bread, if you’re ordering club sandwiches. Its thickness and heartiness make for a great bread for the rich, thick and flavorful fillings, not to mention that a sub roll just doesn’t seem to cut it.

Unlike many of its competitors, Jimmy John’s has perfected the ratio between meat, cheese and fixings and, in the process, created sandwiches worthy to be enjoyed every day. The ratio is crucial in the enjoyment of a sandwich since you will get just the right amount of each ingredient with each bite. Even the mayo is drizzled just right although a few customers say that Jimmy John’s tend to overdo on the mayo.

The menu is impressive, especially if you’re a sandwich fan. The line of Plain Slim sandwiches are a great choice for people who don’t want the fixings, just the basics, without compromising on the delicious flavors. The choices include Ham and Cheese, Roast Beef, Tuna Salad, Turkey Breast, Double Provolone, and Salami, Capicola and Cheese.

The 8-inch sub sandwiches are larger so these are popular among customers with a prodigious appetite or for sharing between two people. These are typically made of French bread, fresh cut vegetables, and high-quality meats and cheeses.

Keep in mind that Jimmy John’s typically doesn’t change the ingredients on its subs and sandwiches. Yes, you can request the staff to hold off on an ingredient but you can’t customize your sub by adding an extra ingredient, unless otherwise noted on the menu.

Tip: Ask for the avocado spread, if it’s okay to be paired with your sub or sandwich, since it’s a better condiment than mayo.

The choices are limited but the flavorful quality makes it worth the while. The Pepe, for example, consists of wood-smoked ham with a topping of lettuce, tomato and provolone cheese. The Big John, a signature sandwich, has roast beef cooked medium-rare, lettuce and tomato while the Totally Tuna is a fish lover’s delight with its housemade tuna mixed with onions, celery and sauce; the veggies in this tuna delight are lettuce, tomato, and cucumber with the sprouts being an option.

The Unwich doesn’t have any bread but it has all the meat, cheese and fixings on a regular sandwich; the price for an Unwich is also the same as for its sandwich counterpart. Go for the Unwich if you want to skip the carbs from the bread.

The menu also has chocolate chip and oatmeal raisin cookies for dessert, soda, real potato chips, and kosher dill pickle. You can also request for extra meat, cheese, and/or avocado spread when it’s allowed with your order.

We have to note, too, that Jimmy John’s is known for its cheap prices and fast delivery of orders, which are great for customers who don’t have time to tarry.
