About Culver’s

Culver’s, known as Culver Franchising System, Inc., is a privately-owned and operated casual fast-food chain of restaurants. Most of its restaurants are in the Midwestern United States. 

History

Craig and Lea Culver as well as George and Ruth Culver, Craig’s parents, opened the first Culver’s in Sauk City, Washington. As of June 2019, there are more than 700 restaurants across 24 states in the United States. 

What They’re Famous For

Culver’s is well-known among its loyal clientele for its signature ButterBrger and fresh frozen custard. According to its management, these signature food items are cooked to order and crafted by hand throughout the day, respectively, thus ensuring their freshness. 

The burger patties used on the ButterBurger are 100% fresh – never frozen – beef that are then seared to perfection. Once cooked, these are served on lightly buttered and toasted bun thus the name ButterBurger. Since these are cooked to order, there’s a longer waiting period than in most fast-food restaurants but loyal customers say that these burgers are worth the wait.

As for the fresh frozen custard, it’s made from the finest dairy products mixed with a combination of Dutch-blend chocolate and cold-pressed vanilla. Since each batch is made fresh every day in every restaurant’s kitchen – there apparently isn’t a central commissary – the frozen custard has a fresh and refreshing quality to it, too. 

Why Eat Here

There are obviously two items on the menu that makes Culver’s what it is – the ButterBurger and the fresh frozen custard. You likely won’t consider your visit to Culver’s as complete unless you have had your fill of both of these signature items!

The ButterBurger can be ordered in three ways – Single, Double, and Triple. The Single ButterBurger is obviously smaller in size than the Double and Triple ButterBurgers but don’t be fooled by its size – we have to say that it tastes just as great as its larger counterparts! The lightly buttered and toasted bun has a rich, buttery mouth-feel that provides the perfect backdrop for the juicy, tender and flavorful beef patty. 

There are several choices in the burgers including Culver’s Deluxe, Culver’s Bacon Deluxe, ButterBurger Cheese, Cheddar ButterBurger with Bacon, and the Original ButterBurger. While there have been additions to the menu, the Original ButterBurger’s recipe apparently has remained the same since Culver’s was established.

Most customers who have enjoyed Culver’s fresh frozen custard agree that it’s among the best fast-food desserts they have enjoyed, and it’s worthy of the extra calories. The frozen custard can be described as premium ice cream – it’s richer, creamier, and definitely more decadent than your store-bought ice cream, and it won’t freeze your taste buds or cause brain freeze. 

The menu, nonetheless, isn’t limited to these signature items! There’s also a wide range of appetizers, entrées and desserts to satisfy your appetite for great food at reasonable prices. 

We highly recommend the North Atlantic cod, a hand-battered fish that’s crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, just as you would expect from a delicious fish. The Crispy Chicken Sandwich is the perfect snack – or lunch, if you want a lighter meal – that combines the juiciness of chicken, the toasted crispness of bread, and the crispiness of fresh vegetables.

There are freshly-made vegetable salads, too, of which the Chicken Cashew Salad is our favorite, thanks to its crisp vegetables and crunchy cashews. The Beef Pot Roast is a filling meal on its own, and it can quickly become a favorite among your group because of its deliciously homemade quality. The Butterfly Jumbo Shrimp is big on flavors, too, while the onion rings and green beans, which are Culver’s famous sides, are simply wonderful.

Other wonderful dishes on the Culver’s menu are Buffalo Chicken Tenders, Spinach Artichoke BLT, Original Chicken Tenders, and Spicy Crispy Chicken Sandwich. The drinks menu include lemonades, the perfect complement to the savory foods and sweet desserts – the tanginess of lemon highlights the savory quality of the entrées as well as cuts through the sweetness of the desserts.   

You will love the great customer service, too! From the time you walk in, you will be warmly greeted by the waiters, a refreshing change from the indifference shown by crew members in other fast-food restaurants. You may even find a Culver’s restaurant where the manager actually comes to your table and check that everything’s okay with your dining experience.

The restaurants are always very clean, a great thing when you’re a stickler for hygiene in restaurants. These are great for lunch and dinner times, as well as for times when you’re hankering for sweets. The ambiance is casual so these are great for kids, families and large groups.
