Susan and Donald Sutherland, the founders of Cold Stone Creamery, envisioned a company that promotes the enjoyment of smooth and creamy premium ice cream, the kind that was neither hard-packed nor soft-served. In 1988, the same year it was founded, Cold Stone Creamery opened its first store in Tempe, Arizona. But it would take another seven years before its first franchised store opened in Tucson, Arizona.

Kahala Brands is the current owner of the international ice cream chain; corporate headquarters are in Scottsdale, Arizona. Aside from the world-famous Cold Stone Creamery brand, the company has also engaged in co-branding ventures with Tim Hortons, Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, and Soup Kitchen International.

What They’re Famous For

Cold Stone Creamery specializes in ultra-premium ice cream with the option for customization, as well as several ice-cream based products from ice cream cupcakes and cakes, cookie sandwiches, and pies to smoothies, shakes and milkshakes. Many of these products are available in several sizes, such as Kid’s Size and Gotta Have It, as well as in diverse variety of designs and flavors.

The customization options can be overwhelming, too, particularly for first-timers to Cold Stone Creamery. After choosing a flavored ice cream, customers then choose their preferred mix-ins like candies, nuts and brownies, even syrups – and it’s the personalization possibilities that keep customers coming back for more.

Why Eat Here

How would you like the staff singing to you when you give them a tip? If you like it, then you will want to give the staff at Cold Stone Creamery with tips for their friendly, fast and courteous service! Such personal touches make the ice cream chain among the best places to go for satisfying your sweet tooth.

You’re obviously visiting your neighborhood Cold Stone Creamery shop for the ice cream and you will always find satisfaction in its offerings.  There are just so many flavors to choose from that it’s tempting to order as many you can and then try to finish all of them but resist the temptation! You always have the chance to come back again and again to enjoy as many of the flavors as you want and to enjoy your favorites with every visit.

You can perhaps start with the Strawberry Banana Rendezvous, a mix of slices of fresh strawberries and bananas in a strawberry ice cream. The Chocolate Devotion has a gooey and chocolatey quality that evokes childhood memories of sneaking chocolate ice cream from the fridge and slathering Hershey’s syrup on it. The Cookie Doughn’t You Want Some is a mix of silky vanilla ice cream with chunky cookie dough, a guilty pleasure worth every lick off the spoon.

The Apple Pie A La Cold Stone is an apple pie – graham cracker pie crust with just the right amount of apple pie filling – in ice cream form, a treat that doesn’t disappoint no matter how many times you’ve eaten it.  The That’s How I Roll ice cream mixes cinnamon rolls with cake batter and yellow cake, an extra-rich ice cream that gives new meaning to cinnamon.  The Peanut Butter Cup Perfection has Reese’s peanut butter cups, an addictive flavor that we won’t complain about even with its strong peanut butter aftertaste.

Well, of course, you can always customize your own ice cream instead of choosing from the available regular and seasonal flavors. Cold Stone Creamery makes all of its ice cream fresh every day and on site so customers have the assurance that it’s as fresh, delicious and refreshing as can be.

The Ultimate Ice Cream Experience, as Cold Stone Creamery calls it and we agree, starts by choosing your base flavor ice cream. Then, you can add your choice in fruits, nuts and candy, among other mix-ins. Yes, there are thousands of possible combinations!

Did we mention that the portions at Cold Stone Creamery are huge? Even the small waffle cone is large so it can be a challenge to finish your own ice cream creation before the ice cream melts.

Keep in mind that Cold Stone Creamery shops have a casual vibe so bringing your family and friends for an impromptu mini-party to celebrate life isn’t unusual. The staff even know how to handle fussy customers who can’t seem to decide on their ice cream flavor and mix-ins as well as kids who often make a mess.
