History

Michael Lastoria and Steve Salis opened the first &pizza shop in July 2002 in Washington, D.C. Many more locations opened in New York City, among other places.

What They’re Known For

&pizza is known for its customizable oblong-shaped pizzas with a wide range of toppings including meats, vegetables and cheeses available. Each pizzeria is also tailored according to the locale, such as local artists in charge of the interior décor, and many of these places also offer beer, wine and cocktails for adult customers.

Since 2015, the chain of pizzerias has conducted its annual Pi Day celebration. No, it isn’t exactly about the mathematical symbol but instead about the pizzerias allowing couples to hold their weddings here. The couples are offered free pizza, cake and alcoholic drinks, as well as photography and officiants; these free services are offered in locations from Washington, D.C. to New York, Baltimore, and Philadelphia.

Keep in mind that the &pizza chain offers mostly thin-crust pizzas, the perfect balance between crispiness and fluffiness. The thin crust also puts the spotlight on the flavorful quality of the toppings – and we’re not just talking about your regular toppings either. The wide range of toppings even include several types of fruit not usually seen on pizzas, such as blueberries, so it’s possible to create your own “dessert pizza”!

Of course, the savory pizzas are the most popular because there’s something so comforting about the familiar.  While the pizzas are customizable, there are also plenty of chef-inspired, ready-to-serve pizzas at your disposal. The trick is in choosing the pizza – or pizzas, for that matter – that will satisfy your craving for the Italian-American favorite.

Let’s start with the Og Pizza, a classic favorite that contains only the basic ingredients yet appeals to a gourmand’s taste – tomato, basil and mozzarella with generous olive oil. It’s a classic pizza that will never run out of favor and flavor because each ingredient complements the others.

For a sweet and spicy pizza, your best choice may well be the American Honey Pizza, a slice of heaven with its combination of spicy tomato base upon which are nestled pepperoni, creamy mozzarella, arugula, goat cheese and red pepper flakes with a sprinkling of honey. There’s the Moonstruck Pizza, too, with its luscious tastes from the mushroom truffle, garlic ricotta, mushroom, mozzarella, goat cheese, grilled onions, and fig balsamic.

The Maverick Pizza is for meat lovers who want their deli treats – pepperoni, salami and Italian sausage – and then some. With its classic tomato sauce combined with rich basil pesto, parmesan, and mozzarella, it has remained a firm favorite through the years.

Are you ready to sacrifice for a great garlic-based pizza? If you are, then you will find the sacrifice worth it, thanks to the garlicky goodness of the Gnarlic Pizza – garlic ricotta, garlic oil, and grilled onion in smooth mozzarella and parmesan dressing.  Add a slice or two of the Farmer’s Daughter Pizza – spicy tomato, Italian sausage, spinach, red pepper chili oil, and egg – and your day is complete.

Who says pineapples don’t belong in a pizza? They do and the Pineapple Jack Pizza is proof of it with its pineapple slices generously mixed with pickled red onion, salami and BBQ sauce. Order the Italian Salad Pizza, too, and ignore the guilt feelings because it’s just such a good mix of black olive, pickled red onion, and romaine lettuce.

Every &pizza location is a great place to hang out, too, thanks to its laidback atmosphere, open plan layout, and cheerful décor. The staff members are patient, too, while you choose the toppings to your personalized pizza, even giving helpful inputs about the possible flavor combinations. But they aren’t in your face, so to speak, either, so you can enjoy your pizza even when it looks weird – “each to his own” seems to be the motto here.
